Forest school for Cruinníú na nOg at Kilcullen Library

Children at yesterday's Dulra session in the Valley.

A special Cruinníú na nOg celebration with Dulra Forest School will take place at Kilcullen Library on Saturday, 7 June, writes Brian Byrne. The free event is for children aged 5-12.
The workshop will give participants a hands-on opportunity to explore their creativity using natural materials. Full details and registration for the event can be had from Julie in the Library.
Dúlra Forest School regularly holds sessions in the Valley in Kilcullen and was one of the attractions at yesterday's Fairy Trail Family Fun Day. Run by Kate Maher with Carina Doyle and Cressida Lynch, the school connects children with nature through arts and crafts, storytelling, and the use of the Irish language.
Cruinníú na nOg is Ireland’s national day of free creativity for children and young people under 18. Organised by Creative Ireland in partnership with RTE and local authorities, the initiative encourages young people across the country to engage in culture and creativity through music, art, coding, theatre, and more.

Springtime blooming in The Valley

This clump of snowdrops is only one of many which are poking up after winter sleep, right along the Valley Park.
Spring may not quite be in the air, but it's certainly on its way.

Spiders busy on the bridge

Walking down town this evening I was tipped off by Frances Moloney about the amazing spiders webs spun between the bridge railings, writes Brian Byrne.

She said one of her dogs is afraid of spiders which brought them to her attention.

These few shots show just some of the activity, which also demonstrates how effective the night-time webs are in catching tiny flies, meals for the web-spinners.

Ducks again ...

And here are a couple of shots this morning ... these are in a much less bothered mood.

Ducks busy at the bridge

There was a lot of activity amongst a group of mallard ducks at the bridge yesterday, writes Brian Byrne.

They begin pairing off this time of the year and there's a fair deal of action between competing males, including showing off and fighting (that last we didn't catch on camera but some of it was quite vicious).

The female lays eggs at the start of the nesting season, which is around the beginning of spring, at which point the male leaves her.

Wild and small in the Valley

Here's a picture of a dormouse, spotted in the Valley by Thelma Kenna.

Noel Clare
tells us that there's a dormouse population apparently settled in the Valley, and he has also spotted some in New Abbey.

"They have become relatively common around stud farms in Kildare - probably coming in originally on straw from France and the UK."

UPDATED: This article has been changed to note that the animal is a dormouse, and not a shrew as previously thought.

Out and about in McGarry's Lane

A few photos from Mary Brennan to raise a smile as we begin the slide into early autumn. Above is a pygmy shrew she saw while walking in McGarry's Lane, and below a wild orchid growing in the same area. The shrew is about the size of a walnut.

Below is a spider's web photographed from a window in her home.

Credit Union helps Lui Na Greine biodiversity project

Pics courtesy Lui Na Greine Working Group.

A biodiversity project at the Lui Na Greine estate is now well under way thanks to support from Kildare Credit Union, writes Brian Byrne.

Members of the estate's Working Group have planted barrels with pollinator-friendly spring bulbs and winter bedding plants, and a bird feeder, bird table and a hedgehog box have been installed at strategic places in the estate grounds.

The Working Group saw an advertisement from the Credit Union's Outreach Programme earlier this year offering to help biodiversity projects. "We put in our application, but everything was then postponed because of the Covid lockdown," says the Group's Majella Leighton. "We finally got our funding in September, and that enabled us to get down to it."

The plan had two phases, planting for pollinators and also looking at nature in general in the estate. Although some planting for the overall project has to be deferred until the spring, a good start was made, and it's hoped both the bird feeder and hedgehog box will be made use of through the coming winter.

"We used to see quite a few hedgehogs in the area, though not as many since the 2010 big cold snap," Majella says. "They hibernate, and we're hoping that one or more will take advantage of the warm and dry space as we get into winter."

The estate already had two areas being managed for wildlife and wild flowers, and these are where the box and the bird table have been located. This kind of project also serves to brings households in a community together, and Majella says the Group particularly involved children from the estate, from the very early stage.

All concerned are very grateful to Kildare Credit Union, whose support fully covered the costs of the project.

July is Plastic-Free Month

Local blogger and nature enthusiast Cliona Kelliher has written a recent piece on ways of cutting down on plastics in daily home life, writes Brian Byrne.

It's not that she expects her actions will change the world in terms of the current contamination and damage to wildlife and nature of plastic and micro-plastics. But given that July is designated Plastic-Free Month (you didn't know, did you? Neither did I) looking at the 'easy changes' might be worth while.

Her piece looks at some options she's trying. Like beeswax wraps for food, bamboo replacements for everyday products such as toothbrushes and cotton buds, solid bar shampoos and conditioners, and more.

If you feel it might be an idea for you, have a read here.
