Ducks busy at the bridge

There was a lot of activity amongst a group of mallard ducks at the bridge yesterday, writes Brian Byrne.

They begin pairing off this time of the year and there's a fair deal of action between competing males, including showing off and fighting (that last we didn't catch on camera but some of it was quite vicious).

The female lays eggs at the start of the nesting season, which is around the beginning of spring, at which point the male leaves her.
