A mass will be celebrated in Kilcullen this evening for Fr Niall Mackey, who is leaving the parish for a new post in Bray, writes Brian Byrne. He is moving on with best wishes and fond memories from many parishioners. The mass will begin at 7.30pm.
Fr Mackey came to Kilcullen in 2013, replacing Fr Michael Murphy. During his time here, he celebrated both the Golden Jubilee and the 55th anniversary of his ordination.
A keen marathon runner, Fr Mackey in recent years has still managed to run a number of half-marathons, notably in the US where has has been a regular participant in Columbus, Ohio.
He has a strong interest in technology, and during the early days of the pandemic he initiated Zoom meetings with children in local schools preparing for First Communion.
Fr Mackey's father, Dr Herbert O Mackey, was very involved in efforts to have the remains of patriot Roger Casement repatriated to Dublin in 1966.
Fr Gary Darby, currently Co-Parish Priest in Kilmore West Parish in Dublin, will take up duties here as Parish Priest in early August.
