Fr Niall tackling Dublin Marathon today

Kilcullen's Fr Niall Mackey is one of the 22,500 people who will be taking part in the Dublin City Marathon today, writes Brian Byrne.

A regular participant in marathons and half-marathons for many years, Fr Niall recently took part in the Berlin Marathon, completing half the course in the required time. At Mass last evening he told parishioners that he decided at that point to leave that event. "But I'm going to have another go in Dublin tomorrow," he said.

Among the regular events he runs in is the annual Nationwide Children's Hospital Columbus Half-Marathon in Ohio, USA, which raises many millions of dollars for the Nationwide Children's Hospital.

The Dublin Marathon was first staged in 1980 with an entry of 2,100. It is now the fifth largest big-city marathon in Europe.
