Issues on water taste, colour, 'should be notified to Irish Water'
Anyone having an issue with the taste and colour of water in Kilcullen, are being urged to contact Irish Water about it, writes Brian Byrne.
As reported previously on the Diary, the supply of water to the Kilcullen area has been in the process of change for some time, and this process has now been completed.
The water supply to this area is now coming from the River Barrow in Athy, via the extraction facility at Srowland.
A conditioning plant at Srowland is supposed to remove the properties that cause discolouration and hardness in the water from the Barrow, but this has not been used for at least two years.
There are many anecdotal reports of changes to the taste and colour of the water here, as well as furring from lime scale. But Irish Water has told Cllrs Tracey O'Dwyer and Evie Sammon that they 'have not received any complaints' about these.
A downstream effect of the change will likely see increased damage to electric appliances that use water, including kettles, washing machines, and dishwashers, unless the conditioning plant is put back in operation.
Comments should be emailed to Irish Water at customerservice@water.ie, and all responses should be filed.
It is important to note that the water is perfectly safe to drink, which is the response that Irish Water habitually makes. They seem reluctant to address any queries about hardness, taste and colour.
