Kilcullen in hosepipe ban area

Kilcullen is in the area covered by a just-announced six-week hosepipe ban, writes Brian Byrne. Uisce Éireann has imposed the ban in Dublin, south Tipperary, parts of Kildare, Meath, Wexford and Wicklow, due to the "exceptionally warm and dry weather".

The ban applies to activities such as watering gardens, washing vehicles and filling paddling pools.

Subject to weather conditions during the period stated, the ban could be shortened or extended.

Parts of Kildare are already under nighttime water restrictions to enable the refilling of reservoirs.

Drop the hosepipe, urges Uisce Éireann

Uisce Éireann has urged people in the greater Dublin area, which includes Kildare, not to use hosepipes to water their gardens during the current hot spell, writes Brian Byrne. The service says that if water usage continues at current rates, it will be forced to impose nighttime restrictions on supply.

A new record for water usage in the region was set in recent days, with reservoir levels dropping by up to 30 million litres a day.

Across the country, 25 water supplies out of a nationwide total of more than 700 are currently under nighttime restriction. These include parts of Kilkenny, Tipperary, Donegal, Cork, Kerry, Limerick, and Meath.

Uisce Éireann meeting in TMH this evening

Uisce Éireann is inviting residents in the Two Mile House area to a public information meeting this evening, Monday 25 May, about major water network upgrade works between Corbally and Great Connell in Kildare. The drop-in session will take place at Two Mile House GAA Club from 5pm to 6.30pm.

The briefing relates to the Two Mile House Water Network Upgrade Project, which involves installing over 10 kilometres of new water mains along the L2032 Corbally, Harbour Road, Great Connell and Little Connell. Around 1,000 metres of new pipe have already been laid, with the project due for completion in late 2027.

Uisce Éireann says works will continue on a phased basis to limit disruption, but short-term water outages may be required, with at least 48 hours’ notice given to customers.

TMH road closure

A section of the L2032 road from Two Mile House village to Mylerstown Cross will be closed from 12 August until 1 September, to facilitate upgrade works to the water infrastructure by Uisce Éireann.

Diversions will be via Stephenstown South (L6073) and the Kilcullen Road (R448).

Water supply disruption

A heads-up that there may be water supply disruptions in the Branncockstown area on Thursday 10 July has been issued by Uisce Éireann, writes Brian Byrne. This is due to works to install a valve.

The works are scheduled to take place from 10am until 3pm and when completed it may take up to four hours for full return of supply.

Traffic management will be in place for the duration of the works. 

The works will affect a wide area including Greatconnell, Rosetown and Corbally.

Suspected sewage leak into Liffey

An investigation is under way into a possible leak of raw sewage into the Liffey at the back of the Town Hall, writes Brian Byrne. The matter was raised by a local resident.

Cllr Tracey O'Dwyer reported the issue to Kildare County Council's environment department and directly to Uisce Éireann through their Local Representative Support Desk.

Uisce Éireann is currently liaising with the council's Wastewater Department on the suspected leak.

Sewerage repairs in Kilcullen

Traffic management has been in place at the crossroads in Kilcullen this morning to facilitate emergency sewerage works, writes Brian Byrne.

A break in the sewerage main has now been repaired, and the engineers say the work should be finished by lunchtime.

Water mains repair work

Uisce Eireann has notified of unscheduled repairs to a burst water main which may cause supply disruptions to St Brigid's Avenue, Kilcullen and surrounding areas.

Works are scheduled to take place until 10pm today 30 September.

UE recommends that 3-4 hours after the estimated restoration time for supply to fully return.

Mains repair works may cause supply disruption to Newbridge Road, Brannockstown, Kilcullen, Kilashee, Piper's Hill, Monread, Naas Main Street, Sallins Road, Green Avenue, Naas and surrounding areas in Co. Kildare.

Uisce Éireann sets up text alert for water issues

A new text update service has been put in place by Uisce Éireann to alert water users of issues in their area, writes Brian Byrne.

Householders or tenants can sign up for the free service at this link.  They will be sent a text if there is an issue expected to last for more than four hours that will affect the property.

All that's required is a mobile phone number and an Eircode.

Councillor wants Uisce Éireann to address 'unacceptable' taste, smell of water

Kildare-Newbridge MD councillor Chris Pender has called on Uisce Éireann-Irish Water to do more to mitigate the smell and taste of mains water caused by the aromatic compound geosmin, writes Brian Byrne.

Geosmin is a natural product produced by bacteria. It's not a hazard to health, but the earthy smell and taste can make the water fairly unpalatable. The issue was fairly strong last year and now has apparently resurged in water provided from the River Barrow to customers in Athy, Newbridge, Kildare and surrounding regions. The councillor says it is 'plaguing' residents and is 'unacceptable'. 

Cllr Pender wants Uisce Éireann to use temporary treatments such as activated carbon and also to initiate a review and upgrade of water treatment facilities to deal with the matter.

However, over recent years, statements from the water authority in response to complaints about taste or smell or increased hardness indicate that Uisce Éireann do not hold themselves responsible for such matters, emphasising that their remit is to provide clear water that is safe to drink.

Water supply almost fully restored

Residents of Lui na Greine had their water supply restored last night around 11pm, following work by Uisce Eireann on a burst water main, writes Brian Byrne.

Supply had earlier been restored to Moanbane Park yesterday afternoon. Hermitage Park, Kilcullen will be without water today while repairs are being carried out. "It is expected to have the issue fully resolved later today," says Cllr Tracey O'Dwyer. "The good news is that the source of the leak has been identified."

The disruption included areas around Silliot Hill, Logstown, and Naas Road Kilcullen, and was reported to Uisce Eireann on Monday morning. The initial estimate for repair works was to have had them completed by 9pm on Monday evening, but yesterday emergency supplies of water were delivered to Lui na Greine and the Link Business Park.

"They delivered bottles of water to the houses, and installed the water tanks," Paul Leighton told the Diary last evening.

Water still out in parts of Kilcullen

A water main burst which has left parts of Kilcullen with no supplies for 24 hours remains unrepaired this morning.

The disruption includes areas around Silliot Hill, Logstown, and Naas Road Kilcullen, and was reported to Irish Water (Uisce Eireann) yesterday morning.

The initial estimate for repair works was to have them completed by 9pm last night, but residents report to the Diary this morning that they are still without supply, and that as of 10.30pm yesterday they had been told the source of the problem still hadn't been located.

A burst water main is being repaired in the Gilltown-Yellow Bog area.

It's hoped to have the work finished by 9pm.

There may be some discolouration in the water locally afterwards.

Water supply disruption in Brannockstown area today

Water supply may be disrupted today in the general Brannockstown, Grangemore and Milemill areas due to mains repair works.

The works are scheduled to take place from 10am until 3pm. 

Uisce Éireann advises that customers should allow 2-3 hours after the estimated restoration time for supply to fully return.
