Joyce celebrations at Croi Anu Moone

A pre-Bloomsday double celebration of James Joyce will take place in Croi Anu Moone Creative Centre, writes Mary Pat Moloney.

The event at 8pm on Friday 10 June will feature 'Strolling through Ulysses', written and performed by Robert Gogan, takes us through the fun-filled story of Bloomsday 16th June 1904 — the iconic day on which James Joyce based his novel 'Ulysses'. Robert’s performance guides us through the curious events and quirky characters of the book in a humorous, entertaining and informative way. Bawdy, irreverent and great fun!

We also have Cathriona Ni Threasaigh, who first performed 'Molly Bloom' for President Higgins in Aras An Uachtarain on Bloomsday 2012, and in the Joyce Jower in Sandycove every year since.

This is the first time these performers have come together and we are very excited to have them share their wonderful work and passion for Joyce in this pre-Bloomsday celebration.

Tickets €15 on the door. Call 087 8381933 to reserve seats.

Yarn bombers will strike today

This popular walking area by the Liffey in Newbridge will look an awful lot different by this afternoon, when the Kildare ICA Yarn Bomb squad have done their work, writes Brian Byrne.

For many months now, the ladies of various ICA clubs across the county, led by those from Athgarvan ICA, have been knitting and crocheting furiously to be ready to colourfully transform the area.

They've been joined by other knitting groups, and by knitters in a number of local schools.

The installation gets under way today at 11am, and by this evening the trees will have new wooly jumpers, there will be a gaily decorated bike, a rainbow elf, and anything else that isn't moving will have gotten the treatment.

The event will be a 'knitted in' part of the Newbridge JuneFest festival, which begins tomorrow.

Cooking Summer Camp for children

A 3-day Summer Camp at Kalbarri Cookery will provide children with lots of fun and an appreciation of cooking and baking, writes Brian Byrne.

The Camp is being run twice in July, on 5/6/7 and 12/13/14, with sessions from 10am-3pm for participants, aged 6-17 years.

Lunch is provided in the deal, which costs €150 per child. Book with Siobhan at 087 2932501.

Good news for Kilcullen residents groups

When the vote in the Naas MD on Residential Association grants was passed today, it was good news for Kilcullen RAs thanks to FG’s Cllr Fintan Brett, writes Brian Byrne.

It was the second go at the grants allocation. When they came up for consideration at the April meeting, Cllr Brett disagreed with the allocation of the grants and requested that they be redistributed, as estates outside Naas with the same number of houses or more were not receiving the same amount of a grant as those in Naas town.

Councillor Moore stated that what the Naas town residents associations get goes back to Naas Town Council time and that this money comes from the rate payers in the town and other funds. A discussion took place between the members. The Mayor put it to the members that they vote on the issue and as suggested by Councillor Scully that the Environment Department draw up criteria for the issuing of the grants

The members voted against the grants as submitted and voted in favour of the grants being referred back to the Environment Department to draw up new criteria on how the grants would be distributed.

The actual vote was six members for the grants to be re-considered, while two councillors voted against and one abstained.

The vote on the revised disbursements took place this morning, and for Kilcullen, Cnoc na Greine was awarded almost €4,000, compared to €2,200 last year. Hillcrest will get €1,200 for 2016 compared to just €600 last year.

"The revised figures approved today ensures all resident associations are treated equally," the councillor told the Diary.

KCA to survey sustainable energy opportunities

Kilcullen Community Action is to appoint a project manager to identify areas where the town can benefit from renewable energy programmes, writes Brian Byrne.

This was decided at a recent meeting of KCA, the umbrella group for Tidy Towns and other community initiatives.

It follows a call by the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland for community groups to join its dedicated Sustainable Energy Communities network.

An SEC can comprise all the different energy users in the community including homes, sports clubs, community centres, churches and businesses.

Being part of the SEC network provides groups with the opportunity to share knowledge and insight and to meet with other members who are carrying out a diversity of energy efficiency projects

Is operated by 'Champions' from SECs who set up special events and programmes, and membership also enables groups to access relevant technical supports and funding through SEAI.

KCA will undertake the survey in tandem with other works under the Sustainable Waste & Resource Management element of its Tidy Towns Action Plan.

The Guide lists 590 pubs in Britain and Ireland, 25 of which are in the Republic. Only Clare beat Kildare, with four listings, while only two are listed each in Dublin, Galway and Mayo.

According to the Guide’s editor Rebecca Burr, each premises was anonymously judged by the Michelin Guide team of full-time inspectors.

Sean Swan causing bother to canoeists

This is Sean Swan, who has been causing a certain amount of angst to members of the Kilcullen Canoe Club over the last while, writes Brian Byrne.

Sean is spending a lot of time patrolling the length of river from Berney’s Inch down to the bridge, and canoeists who get too close to him, or to his mate Siobhan’s nest near the outlet of the old Mill Stream have found themselves at the receiving end of his ire.

“A few have overturned their boats when he came flapping at them,” says Brendan O’Connell, longtime canoeist and a founder member of the Kilcullen Canoe Club. “But sure he’s only doing his job, guarding his family.”

Brendan is the one who has named the swan pair as Sean and Siobhan. When the Diary went on a (photographic) shooting expedition this morning, Sean was busy down near the Market Square, foraging, and preening himself.

Siobhan, meantime, was keeping her head down and minding her clutch, which must be almost ready to hatch.

Ray Kelly new chair of KCA

Ray Kelly has been elected Chairperson of Kilcullen Community Action, succeeding Niall McDonnell, writes Brian Byrne.

Ann Cashman and Evelyn O’Sullivan are Secretary and Assistant Secretary respectively, and Eoin Houlihan has taken over the role of Communications in KCA, which is the umbrella organisation for Kilcullen Tidy Towns and community development initiatives.

KCA is currently developing short, medium and long-term plans for improvements in Kilcullen under a number of headings, including Built Environment & Streetscape, Landscaping & Open Space, Wildlife Habitats & Natural Amenities, Sustainable Waste & Resource Management, Tidiness & Litter, and Residential Streets & Housing Estates.

The next meeting of KCA will be on Tuesday 7 June, in Fallons. Meanwhile, Saturday mornings and Monday evenings are current Tidy Towns work times. All welcome to participate.

Henry Flanagan Memorial Concert

The Henry Flanagan memorial Concert will take place on Monday next, 30 May, as part of the Newbridge JuneFest 2016.

Majella Cahill and the Aquinas Singers will host the concert in the Dominican College Church, Newbridge, beginning at 8pm. A spectacular evening of choral music will include an organ recital by Professor Gerard Gillen (pictured), Titular Organist, Emeritus Professor of Maynooth University.

The format of the concert is similar to that of previous years with six choirs — each performing two pieces of music interspersed with organ masterpieces by Gerard Gillen.

Henry Flanagan was a renowned sculptor and musician and preacher (the piece at St Brigid’s Well in Kilcullen is one of his). This is a special year for Dominicans worldwide as they celebrate 800 years since the foundation of the order. Admission is free.

Children's drama presentation this evening

Kilcullen After School Drama Group is performing their show 'Frozen' this evening in the Town Hall Theatre.

The cast range in age from 5 to 11 years and have been working very hard to get the show on the road.

There is also a whisper that there will be a surprise guest! The show starts at 7pm, open to all, adults €5 and children €2.

Roy Thompson in his own BAG

Whether you’re a regular at the Ballymore Acoustic Gigs, or don’t go at all to the superb live musical events organised by our own Roy Thompson, next Monday’s last one before the summer break is just not to be missed, writes Brian Byrne.

You’ll know Roy’s own singing and songwriting skills if you know him, if you don’t you really should take this opportunity to do so, as Roy himself is the featured artist.

It also marks the first in a series of summer gigs for Roy, who got back into singing for the public only a couple of years ago after spending much of his musical energy on running the BAG. He’s got lots of new songs to sing, and some older ones, too, and he’s being joined on the bill by Eugene Brosnan from Clonakilty.

Having been on the road for 23 years, and taken a sabbatical some years ago to focus on things outside of the world of music, Eugene Brosnan has been slowly but surely returning to regular performance. A fine songwriter in his own right, he also has a knack for re-interpreting other artists' songs through the filters of his own life experiences. Expressive guitar work, and deeply engaging vocals, make for an enthralling sound.

Doors 8:30pm. Gig 9pm sharp. Admission: €12. As I said, not to be missed.

Reminder: Much I Do About Nothing tomorrow

Just a reminder about the very funny mock wedding, 'Much I Do About Nothing', taking place tomorrow night in a marquee behind Town House Hotel, Naas, writes Grainne McGrath.

There's a strong Kilcullen involvement — it stars Martin Heydon as the groom, Mary Murphy, Gormanstown as his mother and Esther Reddy as mother of the bride. Lots of prizes and treats for all attending.

Tickets can be purchased by phoning Lorraine 0879079194 or the Town House Hotel.

TD and councillors see Scoil Bhride traffic 'chaos'

Following representations from concerned parents and school representatives in recent weeks Deputy Martin Heydon attended at Scoil BhrĂde Kilcullen on two occasions on school mornings to see for himself the health and safety risks that are present.

"At my most recent visit last week, I brought the roads area engineer from Kildare County Council to see at first hand the chaos and dangers associated with the morning drop off for both children and parents alike," he says. "Cllrs Fintan Brett and Rob Power also attended this meeting with parents representatives and school management. We discussed potential solutions to the problem, including a pedestrian crossing to make the area safer. In conjunction with Cllr Fintan Brett, I will be fighting to deliver a solution here as soon as possible.

"While this issue was only raised with me recently, I have been working with the school, residents of Castlemartin, Cnoc na Greine and the Area engineer since then to seek the most appropriate solution and ensure it is delivered as soon as possible.

Deputy Heydon is pictured during his first visit a few weeks ago with parents and local residents representatives Angela Larkin and Barry Griffith.

Big plans for reformed Tennis Club

It's almost a case of 'build it and they will come', except that Kilcullen Tennis Club is already built, writes Brian Byrne. It's just defunct. But not after last night.

"My gut feeling is that when we get going, people will flock to it," Eamonn O'Toole told the respectably sized and enthusiastic gathering in Fallons, called to try and get the Club back on its feet.

He outlined how far things had come since he first considered the project three years ago. Kilcullen Development Association — which supported the formation of the original Tennis Club in the same place back in the 1950s — has provided a terms-free loan of €24,000 to get things moving. A number of local businesses have pledged sponsorship amounting to several thousands of euro, and a development plan is in train to add two more courts, and a sheltered viewing area.

"At the moment, the club is not functioning," Eamonn said, adding the sobering thought that there's no insurance on the current courts for those who might be using them informally. "My idea is a complete regeneration, affiliation with Tennis Ireland, and to make it very much a key social part of the community. There will be tennis for all ages, social and competitive, and with four courts we would be in a position to compete in competitions like the Leinster League."

When the club is properly established, application will be made for further funding from organisations like Tennis Ireland and the Sports Council, and Eamonn said that he has already discussed this with Deputy Fiona O'Loughlin, who has considerable experience in this kind of community facilities development and is willing to help.

It is also planned to provide lighting, initially for the new courts, and later on the old ones, which will have to be moved to facilitate this. But all of that is 'down the road'. "We can't go any further without a committee," Eamonn told those present. There was an immediate positive response with many of those at the meeting putting up their hands to volunteer.

A local contractor has already been selected to carry out the initial refurbishment works on the two existing courts. Eamonn said he had hoped to have those courts up and running during the last month, but an issue with the rear boundary fence had to be dealt with first.

A planning application for the major development work will be submitted to Kildare County Council as soon as the club is fully operational. This will include a redesign of the existing entrance, which is very narrow.

It is envisaged that an eventual membership of around 300 is achievable.

Alert from Castlemartin Lodge

A resident from New Abbey in Castlemartin Lodge has contacted the Diary about a silver Audi seen in the area a while ago, with three young men in it.

While it may not be a problem, the fact that the occupants were observed leaving the car and spreading out in different directions before returning to the vehicle has sounded some virtual alarm bells. The gardai have been notified.

Our correspondent has suggested that residents in the area be watchful this evening. Any concerning activity should be reported to the KIlcullen Garda District Text Alert number above.

Reminder: Meeting tonight on reformation of Tennis Club

A meeting is being held in Fallons this evening, Wednesday 25 May, with a view to formally re-starting Kilcullen Tennis Club, writes Brian Byrne.

The meeting is being organised by Eamonn O’Toole, who can be contacted at 086 8115605. It starts at 8pm. All welcome.

There is still a clubhouse and two hard courts at Logstown, where the original club was established in the 1950s, but there hasn’t been a formal club for decades.

Meditation group mooted

Meditation techniques have a strong record in helping people to minimise stress, and provide other benefits too. For those interested in exploring the techniques, a new group is proposed for Kilcullen.

The sessions will be conducted by Damien Gaynor, who has been practicing the techniques developed by GI Gurdjieff for some 20 years, and will be located in the Kilcullen Community Centre.

Those who are interested are encouraged to contact Damien at 086 8226169. The idea is that the group will get under way in the next couple of weeks, on Tuesdays at 7pm.
