Details found in dumped material

An examination of the illegal rubbish dumped at St Brigid's Cemetery in recent days has elicited details which may lead to the discovery of the perpetrator.
The Diary understands that these details have been passed on to the Gardai.

Illegal dumping returns to St Brigid's

The ugly spectre of illegal dumping at St Brigid's Cemetery is back, writes Brian Byrne. This photo from Cllr Tracey O'Dwyer shows clothing, household discards, and general waste left at the bins provided for green waste at the graveyard.
She has notified the council, describing the matter as "just disgusting and so disrespectful", a theme echoed in comments from other Kilcullen residents on her Facebook post.
Last year, a series of dumping incidents at St Brigid's was eventually stopped by cooperation between residents and gardai, when a perpetrator was caught in the act. In December, Cllr O'Dwyer asked the council to install CCTV cameras at both New Abbey and St Brigid's, to help address both dumping and criminals targeting cars parked at the cemeteries.

Dumpers apprehended after another incident tonight

File photos.

Another instance of dumping occurred at McGarry's Lane a short time ago, writes Brian Byrne. But gardai have since apprehended those responsible, and they were brought back to Kilcullen for questioning and to clean up tonight's mess.
Kilcullen Garda would like to thank the public for their help in tracing the culprits.
Illegal dumping has been a serious issue for several weeks, and Gardai and the Community Warden have been investigating.

More dumping overnight, at Old Kilcullen

Image: Kilcullen Town.

The latest example of what is becoming an epidemic of fly-tipping occurred overnight at Old Kilcullen, writes Brian Byrne.
This time, on the road between Whitehall Cross and Old Kilcullen.
It follows three dumping incidents over three weeks at St Brigid's Cemetery on McGarry's Lane, and other occurrences in the Old Kilcullen area.

Here we go (a-dumping) again

The serial illegal dumper on McGarry's Lane must really appreciate Kildare County Council’s quick response in removing his loads, writes Brian Byrne. This is the third such incident in as many weeks at St Brigid's Cemetery.
It's another ten or so bags, containing many Peroni and Heineken beer bottles, and once again a Lidl bag of rubbish among the black bags full of domestic waste.
The Kildare Community Warden was investigating the previous dumpings. There might, or might not, be a clue in this batch on the cigarette packet. It bears the mandatory cancer warning required in many countries. In this case, it's in Romanian. Of course, that could be an Irish person who buys smuggled cigarettes.
The Diary does not like having to cover this kind of story, especially repeatedly. Nor, we are sure, does the council appreciate it. Those in our community who regularly visit the cemetery are more than fed up.

'We can't blame teenagers for this one'

An idyllic country scene photographed by Frances Moloney yesterday, cows in a field on the Logstown Road. Except she wonders about the building rubble that seems to have been dumped in the field.

"A demolished old kitchen? Shed?," she asks. "I wonder if this is a Kilcullen premises that is being renovated or if the dumpers were strangers who 'got lost' on the way to Silliot Hill?

"Perhaps we as consumers should demand to see receipts for dumping appropriately before we pay that obliging chap with the van/trailer who seems such good value ..."

Funny looking bottle ...

The free mattress disposal day was at Silliot Hill last Sunday, but somebody must have misread the location. Pic by Kevin@Kogireland on Twitter.

Contact Council on illegal dumping

Kildare County Council is starting a new anti-dumping campaign today, highlighting how to contact them to report illegal dumping.

Bad behaviour on Mass Path a risk to amenity

On a downside to all the positive things visible in the community, we're getting reports of a lot of wipes, dog dirt, and drink cans along the Mass Path through New Abbey Stud lands, and in the field beside the graveyard, writes Brian Byrne.

Our understanding is that if this persists, the area may be closed off to the public by the landowner.

"This is a wonderful amenity, enjoyed by generations of Kilcullen people," one resident who uses the walk told the Diary this afternoon. "It could be closed because of the mindless activity of a few.

"Also, hanging a bag of dog's shit on a tree does not mean it will magically disappear."

UPDATE: In fairness, your editor took a walk down there this evening, and whatever rubbish there had been is cleared. Let's all make sure it stays that way.

Electrical waste dumped on New Abbey Road

The increasingly noticeable uptick in dumping happened again over the weekend, with this bit of electrical goods found on the New Abbey Road, writes Brian Byrne.

Similar waste was on the other side of the road. The really sad part about this is that there's no charge for disposing of electrical waste.

Both the Kildare County Council facilities, in Athy and at Silliot Hill, are open on weekdays, with longer than normal hours, so there's really no excuse.

Not the way to dispose of this

A reader just sent in these pictures of what looks like a piece of garden waste, dumped at Carnalway today. He suggests that someone may have paid to have it taken away and properly disposed of?
