Tracey gets private funding for Pinkeen bridge

The general area where the bridge crossing will be.

Private funding has been sourced to provide a pedestrian bridge over Pinkeen Stream, councillors heard at today’s meeting of the Kildare-Newbridge MD, writes Brian Byrne.
The bridge has been long sought to provide a safe crossing of the stream for residents of the Castlemartin and Cnoc na Greine estates and pupils going to and from Scoil Bhride and CPC.
In a report to a question from Cllr Fiona McLoughlin Healy seeking an update on the project, officials said no funding source was available for the works within the MD’s resources, but that earlier this year Cllr Tracey O’Dwyer had sourced funding through a private contractor.
The contractor prefers to remain anonymous, the meeting was told, but has had a site meeting with the Council.
The contractor will supply and install two large culverts and the gabion baskets to support the bridge. The works will be carried out under the supervision of the Municipal District office.
The officials said that at the time of the site meeting, the contractor advised that shortage of materials might cause a delay in sourcing and delivery of culverts of the size required, and the Council is currently awaiting an update on delivery.
The design of the bridge by the Council was funded in 2020 from LPT funds allocated to Cllr O’Dwyer.
Last November, Cllr O’Dwyer said the project had moved closer thanks to clearance from the OPW and Inland Fisheries.
The matter of a bridge has been raised at Council level since at least 2015, notably by Cllrs Rob Power and Fintan Brett.
