Kilcullen Parish Church, as it was never seen
This photograph of an architect's design for Kilcullen Parish Church in the late 1800s was sent in by Nessa Dunlea, writes Brian Byrne. The original is on the wall of the Parish Office.
The church was dedicated and opened on 6 September 1872 by Cardinal Paul Cullen, after a very strong campaign by one Fr Langan to build it. Later a Canon, he is buried in Our Lady's Shrine.
The church was designed by JJ McCarthy RHA, and it is clear from the design above that a steeple was to be built, but never happened.
The links here provide further information on the church, including one of my own on a 'twin' of the edifice in Canada, and how that happened.
