Kilcullen clubs get Sports Partnerships grants

Clubs in Kilcullen have been given grants totalling €2,800 from the Local Sports Partnerships investment, writes Brian Byrne.

Kilcullen GAA and Kilcullen AFC will receive €1,400 each under the 2020 scheme, operated by Sport Ireland in association with the National Sports Policy and the National Physical Activity Plan.

They are among 24 clubs in County Kildare to be awarded funding today, amounts ranging from €415-€1,500.

Dance school kickin' that Covid!

This is some of the first ever outdoor class held by Jenny Landers for her dancing school, writes Brian Byrne. It was held last evening on the All-Weather pitch at the Community Centre.

It's all part of what Centre manager Enda O'Neill describes as 'great energy' at the facility this week, and a promise of more activity on the way. "Our local gym No.1 Fitness were on Pitch 1 holding their two 50-minute boot camps," he says. "There are limited places available for next week so if you would like to book just contact coach Beata on 087 9754415 or log on to bookfit.com

"We were also happy to see Jennifer Landers Irish Dance School out doing Jigs and Reels on Pitch 3, the music and energy was tremendous — it’s great to see how our pitch can be used for different activities and not just soccer and football, could it have been a first for Irish Dancing  on one of our pitches? Has Covid 19 help us learn how to utilise spaces in a new way ... I think it has!"

Newbridge FC held a contactless training session on the pitch last night and will continue to do so throughout the summer. Newbridge FC also use the all weather pitch as their home venue.

She will hold Intermediate Pilates classes on Monday 6th July at 8pm, Beginners Pilates on Tuesday 7th July and Thursday 9th July at 7pm. KAFC women's team for Carlow League

Kilcullen AFC will be entering a team in the Carlow & District Football League Women’s Division for the coming season.

The team will be managed by Tadgh Shanahan and David Mitchell. A meeting of players and managers will be held next Wednesday 7 August at 7.30pm in the Clubhouse.

Training will commence Wednesday 14 August at 7.30pm at the Avondale training area and is open to all girls over the age of 15 years.

The committee and all at the club wish the team every success for the coming season.

Sardinia competition is James's 28th

James Nolan dons the green jersey in Sardinia this week for his 28th time as a member of Team Ireland in international competition in transplant and dialysis sports events, writes Brian Byrne.

This week in Cagliari in Sardinia, it will be in the 10th European Transplant & Dialysis Sports Championships, along with 23 other members of the team.

Being able to take part — this time in four Track & Field events and in SIngles Golf — is a constant reminder to him about how lucky he is, he says. Not just being able to compete, but to be alive. Which he likely wouldn’t be if he hadn’t received a donation of a kidney from his sister Catherine more than three decades ago.

“After my first 20 years dealing with kidney problems, including a year on dialysis, that was a life-saver,” he recalled this week before heading for Sardinia.

He was fortunate. The transplant was both a success and long lasting. And, like others on Team Ireland this week, he was determined not to let this ‘second chance at life’ go to waste. As soon as he was deemed well enough, he became a transplant athlete.

“When you have spent your childhood being chronically ill, you end up with an edge and a hunger to make the most of your second chance. I try to do the best I can at everything I turn my hand to, and if I can come home from Cagliari knowing I did the best I could, then any medals are merely a bonus.”

James also committed his ‘second chance’ to promoting awareness of organ donation, and to raising funds to improve the lot of those on treatment for serious kidney ailments.

The Punchestown Kidney Research Fund charity he founded has raised a total of €1.4m over 28 years, and its most recent spend has helped to open a new Renal Unit in Temple Street Children’s Hospital in Dublin.

It was also through the PKRF that he met Emma, his wife with whom he has a 5-year-old son Andrew James. Emma is now a key member of the team at Nolans Butchers, the award-winning business James took over from his late father Andy and of which he is the fourth-generation custodian.

While Emma and Andrew James are regulars at the international sports events, in support of James, they aren’t in Sardinia this week as Emma is completing a Masters in Food Retail Business at the Smurfit Business School.

He’ll be thinking of them, though, as he runs in those four track events and swings his golf club hopefully towards more medals.

And he’ll be thinking too of a friend who passed away during this week, Shay Walker of Newbridge, originally from Kilcullen.

“Shay trained me for athletics in 2002, and he will be sadly missed,” he says. That particular memory will likely spur his efforts on just that important bit more.

Restart of training for Girls Rugby

Training for girls rugby has recommenced at Newbridge Rugby Club in Rosetown, for both the U10 and U12 squads..

The sessions are at 10sm on Saturdays and 6.30pm on Wednesdays. Girls Tag Rugby sessions will continue at 7pm on Mondays.

A new U14 squad is being developed and any girl interersted should come out to the training.

There will be an Open Day at Rosetown on Saturday 9 September.

Welcome home celebration for JB Murphy

"Start saving for Tokyo," Liam Walker warned everybody who turned out for last night's celebration in O'Connell's, writes Brian Byrne. "I think this young lad is going to go all the way."

The occasion was to mark Kilcullen Cycling Club's JB Murphy's success in taking a bronze at the Junior Track Championships in Italy last week. "As far as I'm concerned, he was the moral winner of the gold," Liam Walker said, noting that the gold and silver winners never passed the young Athgarvan man in the sprint, and JB was only held back with 25 metres to go by a young Polish rider who was never even going to be in the medals.

But that didn't take from the very obvious happiness shown last night by his Kilcullen CC colleagues, family, friends, and sponsors. As Liam said, 'it is a wonderful occasion for this small club in Kilcullen'. "We have a young man who can go to Europe and win a silver in his first track race ever, and bronze in his first world championship."

O'Connells upstairs lounge was decorated with a number of flags — the blue and white of Athgarvan, the one from Crossmaglen Rangers because that's where his number one fan, Granny Bernadette is from, the national flag, and the black and white of Kilcullen. "That's the winning flag," Liam said, "because JB is a winner all the way."

JB's next big race will be in the Senior European Championships in Berlin, 'because he needs to get experience at that level'. And then on to the World Cyclocross Championships in the Netherlands in February.

None of that travelling is cheap, and, never one to duck an occasion, Liam pointed out that 'we're about €2,500 short of money for these trips at the moment'.

A good job, then, that there were sponsors and supporters there, and their contribution to the journey so far was emphasised in Liam's speech. "Murphy Surveys, I can't thank them enough, they've even given us a van because we're going to have to tour more or less the world to try and get this young man to the World Championships."

And Cycling Ireland. "I'd have been one of their strongest critics over the years … but they have come up trumps, they have taken a young man from being a raw track cyclist to becoming one of the tops in the world."

Also JB's parents, Brian and Joanne, and his sisters Alex and Kate. "They're superb, fully supportive, the greatest support you can get."

Ray Murphy of Murphy Surveys thanked Liam himself for his work into JB's career. "Behind every success is somebody who puts their heart and soul into a project," he said. "We're delighted to be supporting the Club and we will continue to support them and JB into the future."

Ciaran McKenna of Cycling Ireland also praised the 'huge amount' of people behind JB's progress and promised to be fully behind clubs and riders 'who produce winners'. "We will give them every facility that we can."

Kildare South TD Martin Heydon offered congratulations to JB, his family and the Club. "I'm sure your family and you have made huge sacrifices for you to get where you have. That doesn't happen without support, and we all know the passion that Liam Walker has … when he needs something done for the club and competitors, he doesn't take no for an answer. Which makes it all worthwhile when a talent like JB comes along, and I've no doubt there will be more achievements in the future."

And the young man of the night himself? Well, JB recalled that it all started about five years ago when he asked his Dad for 'a bike with crooked handlebars'. "It came, and I found I liked it, and then I went over to Kilcullen Cycling Club. Liam put me on the bike and followed me, then said to my Da, 'he'll do rightly, we'll take him on'. He threw me into my first race at about two months, and it was hard but it was fun."

JB outlined how he went to his first big race in the Errigal International, where he realised just what level of ability had to be met. "So I trained harder, got into contact with people like Martin O'Loughlin who took me under his wing. I did my first year of Junior and it went well. Then I went to my first cyclocross championships and I loved it."

Thanking everybody who has got behind his efforts, JB says his progress so far has been like 'going from the first step to the top of the stairs'. "I went to Majorca in June, where I did mad training. A world of pain, but definitely worth it in the end. And I wouldn't be here if it wasn't for everyone in this room tonight."

He particularly singled out Liam Walker and his son John for their help. "Liam is always behind me, roaring for me to move up because I'm 'not racing when I'm at the back of the bunch'. He's always there for me, and always gives the true word, pointing in the right direction but letting me make up my own mind. John is also there all the time, dealing with punctures, snapped cables, broken wheels and derailleurs. There's always a solution, and he gets things working again."

For his Mum and Dad and his sisters, and his grandparents, 'they have put miles and miles of work into me … they are all amazing'. He presented Joanne with flowers, and a 'JB's Dad' jacket to Brian.

Liam Walker got the last word, thanking his wife Peggy for 'giving me the latitude to do what I want … nearly always', and John, for always coming through with the best support a father can have.

All in all, it was one of those really good nights, of deserved appreciation for very good people.

Cricket team continues long tradition

An English cricket team coming to play Halverstown at home next Friday was put together more than three decades ago as a motley crew of friends for a tour of matches in Ireland, writes Brian Byrne.

The White City All-Stars was established by Peter Oborne, whose father was attached to the British Embassy at the time, from amongst a group of his student friends. He later became a highly-respected journalist.

The tour became an annual one, and now includes many of the original group as well as some of their younger family members and other ’new blood’.

In the mix of today’s White City All-Stars are those who became celebrated journalists, artists, and authors over the course of the 32 years.

Halverstown Cricket Club has its pitch at Harristown, and is a regular stop on the tour which also takes in venues in Kilkenny, Athlone, Galway and Wicklow.

After Friday’s game with Halverstown, the visitors will be entertained as usual at The Mill (Markeys) in Mile Mill.

Halverstown's season runs from April through September, and they play more than 30 games during it.

John is yet another local champion

Kilcullen has a long history of producing champions in many fields, and here's another, John Healy, writes Brian Byrne. John's strong Kilcullen connection is that he's son of Tom and Jackie Healy.

The current Co Kildare champion for discus and shot putt outdoors, he recently came third in the 2016 Leinster Juvenile U15 shot putt with a personal best of 11.25m.

Just 13 years old and in First Year at CPC, he has been throwing since he was eight, at Crookstown Millview Athletics Club. He's now a member at Celbridge Athletics as his Crookstown coach for almost five years has returned to England.

Last year he competed in the All Ireland Finals in shot, discus and hammer throwing.

They just don't stop coming …

Community Games results

A number of Community Games events took place over the last while, writes Papillon Rabbitte. Below is a summary of the results.

Gaelic Football
The U-12 girls (above) had another great win with a three point victory over a very talented Clontarf side (1:5 to 1:2). It was a fantastic game of football against the Dublin champions and our Kilcullen girls battled hard to the very end.

The girls, who already hold last year's Leinster title, will now play the Leinster semifinal in Hawkfield, Newbridge on the 4th July. All support is welcome and kickoff is at 11am

Cross Country
The Kildare cross county trials were held earlier this month. Our own Molly Aspell ran a terrific race and qualified for the U-14's Kildare relay team. Best of luck to the team in the National Finals this August.

Gymnastics
Well done to all our talented gymnasts who competed at both local and county level.

In the U-9 category, Anna Taylor won a medal for 4th place.

Keira Legg was the winner of the U-11 category and Saoirse O’Brien finished 3rd. Keira will now go forward to represent Kildare at the National Finals in Athlone.

Projects
Congratulations to the Kilcullen entrants who took part in the county final of the projects competition.

In the U-11 category, Chantelle and Jordon Olivier received a bronze medal for their project, 'When my grandparents were young'.

Ava Noone and Aideen Farrell came 4th for their project, 'Ireland's most famous person'.
In the U-13 category, Alison Grimes and Emma Doherty took the silver medal with their project 'The History of the Community Games'.

Maisie Biddulph and Scott Fleming were awarded third place for their project.

Kilcullen cyclist to set paced hour marker

Kilcullen Cycling Club cyclist John Lynch, a rider with Murphy Surveys Kilcullen Cycling Team, will be setting an Irish marker for the paced, hour record, at the outdoor velodrome at Sundrive Road in Crumlin, Dublin, on Saturday.

It's the first time this has been attempted in Ireland, and John hopes to reach between 56km-60km.

Last Sunday in the UK, Bradley Wiggins broke the UCI Hour Record at Lee Valley Velopark by completing a distance of 54.526km.

Once the 35-year-old from Kildare completes the event, he will set a new marker. Officials from Cycling Ireland will be on hand to ratify the distance he achieves. Former international rider and Rás winner Tommy Evans holds the national record for the traditional unpaced hour. He set a marker of 46.166km back in 1999.

Last month John completed his 10th Rás. Leading up to the event, he worked up to 70 hours per week and was up at 5am to fit in training. But while he is a very strong road rider who has won plenty of races, most of his success has come on the track. In the last two years alone he has won 10 medals at the National Championships, four of them gold. He has been training behind the derny (motorised pace bike) on the track in recent weeks, paced by Liam Walker, the chairman of Lynch’s Kilcullen Murphy Surveys club.

“We’ve been talking about it for a while and if nothing else, it will hopefully get a bit of interest going again in the hour record,” Liam said. “We’ve been going to the track and doing around 1.5 hours; a nice steady warm up and then maybe some 20-minute efforts at race pace. It’s also about figuring out the lines around the track because at that speed it’s all slightly different doing 56 or 58kph. We’re aiming to ride steady for the first half and then pick it up. But steady is still 56k per hour!

“It’s also hard to get shelter off the derny in the crosswinds; you have to keep tight, not more than a couple of inches away. And you have to move around the back of it as you go around the track to maximise the shelter depending on how the breeze is hitting you.”

Anyone wishing to witness this unique effort on Saturday, should be at the track for about 12:30pm.

Scoil Bhride wins Cumann na mBunscol final

The Scoil Bhride Kilcullen Camogie team won today's Division 5 in the Cumann na mBunscol Kildare, held at Moorefield GAA Club, writes Brian Byrne.

They beat Allen NS 3-0 (I think, it was a bit confusing towards the end). The happy team is pictured here with the cup and their trainers, Miss O'Callaghan and Miss O'Driscoll.

The Diary understands it was not just the first time they made it to the finals, but the first season they have fielded a camogie team. Well done, girls.

Local Jiu Jitsu champion competing at world level

Kildare-born Jiu Jitsu Champion Joey Breslin is competing this weekend in the World Jiu Jitsu Championships at Long Beach, California, writes Brian Byrne.

The 24-year-old, son of Joseph and Beth from Fontstown and educated in Athgarvan and the Patricians in Newbridge, has been competing at Featherweight Purple Belt level for four years, and is hoping to move up a competitive grade after the weekend's event.

Joey is a grandson of Nora Breslin of Brannockstown, and has many Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) titles and over 100 verifiable matches under his belt. He is a three times Irish National Champion and twice British Champion and has competed at the highest level in elite competition in Ireland, England, Europe and America.

He coaches the Intro BJJ classes at the Straight Blast Gym City Centre in Dublin, which specialises in Wrestling and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

Prior to his World Championship attempts this week, he been in Nevada helping his teammate Conor McGregor prepare for a July 11 bout with the Ultimate Fighting Championships (UFC) Featherweight Champion, the Brazilian Jose 'Scarface' Aldo, in Las Vegas.

David Keenan double Irish gold medalist

Kilcullen's Dave Keenan won his 2nd Irish gold medal in the space of a week on Sunday in the Glo health National Road Relay in Raheny.

David had picked up a National gold medal last weekend with his Newbridge AC team mates of Paul Campbell and Brian Byrne over 10k in the Phoenix park. Paul Campbell and Paul Archbald joined David on the line on Sunday against top class competition from Ireland's best athletics clubs.

The race was a relay consisting of 1 mile-2 mile-1 Mile legs and the lads 4 mile race winning time was clocked as 19.27 which looks like a new course record also. David ran the final 1-mile leg and battled from 2nd place to shoot clear over the last 400m to break the tape in front of a large crowd.
This was a massive result for Newbridge AC and the lads.

David's dad Albert picked up a National silver medal last weekend also so it was a fantastic week for the Keenan men.

Great work by Community Games swimmers

Congratulations to all our swimmers who took part in the county competition in Athy, writes Papillon Rabbitte of Kilcullen Community Games. Nadya Dunne took gold in the girls U10 Freestyle and will now go forward to represent Kildare at the National Finals in August. Also taking home medals were Evan Swan in the boys U14 Backstroke and Isabelle Tyrell in the girls U12 Freestyle both taking fourth place.

The cross county teams for Kildare were also selected recently with the competition being held on the Curragh rugby grounds. Molly Aspell finished third in the U13 1200m trial ensuring her place on the Kildare team for the National Finals in August.

We also had success in the U12 trial which was run over 500 metres. Hannah Breen finished fourth and secured her place on the U12 mixed distance relay team for the National Finals.

Community Games Cross Country event

The Community Games Cross Country Event is taking place this Saturday 15 March at the McDonagh Pitch, Curragh Rugby Club, writes Papillon Rabbitte. Registration is at 1.30pm, entries will be taken on the day.

The events are U/12 Mixed Distance Relays Boys and Girls (Distances - 400 & 600 Meters); U/13 1200m Cross Country Competitions Boys and Girl; U/14 Mixed Distance Relays Boys and Girls (Distances - 600 & 800 Meters).

Badminton update

There are four club matches to report on this week for KBC, writes Enda O'Neill, PRO of Kilcullen Badminton Club. The first match we cover was Tuesday's Mix 1 match at home to Ailsbury in the division 3 Dublin District League. Mix 1 continued their league campaign with another 4-0 victory only dropping one set in the match. Well done to Gareth, Norrie, Caroline and Paddy an impressive win from our division 3 cup finalists.

Also on Tuesday night, Mix 4 played away to local rivals St Laurences in a hard-fought match. This close affair ended up in a 2-2 draw and is an excellent result for the team. Mix 4 are well on track to get out of their group and progress to the next round of the league. Well done to Captain Nicole and her team mates Meave, Kasi and Olivier.

Wednesday the 19th of Febuary saw Dave and his Mix 2 team travel to An Caislean Nua, where they managed to get a two all draw. Dave's team were out again on Friday night in their second outing in two nights. In a close home encounter Mix 2 unfortunately lost out 3-1 in a entertaining match. Hard luck to Dave, Alastor, Lynsey and Aoife.

Also out in a division 6 DDL match were Mix 3 who played the unbeaten table toppers PBAI at home. Mix 3 went down 7-1 but this result does not reflect how close the match was. When all the points were added up at the end, PBAI managed to score just 38 points more than KBC, showing that KBC only lost their individual games by 5 points or less. There were some thrilling 3-setters played and with a bit more experience and composure KBC could have come out on top.

All is not lost however for Enda and his team who with two matches remaining can make the quarter finals if they beat St Judes at home and away. Hard luck to Jen, Helen, Sarah, Fintan, John and super subs Tara and Sean.

Finally KBC won more silverware with doubles pairings of Gareth and Paddy who won the PSLC Grade 3 Mens Doubles competion in Portmarnock. This competition was played on Saturday 22 of February. Out of the eight sets of badminton the lads played they managed to win seven and scoring a massive 335 points between them. Well done to Paddy and Gareth.

Badminton update

A busy start in the first week of january with five games to report on, writes Enda O'Neill of Kilcullen Badminton Club.

The first was held on the 3rd of January with the Mens 1 team playing Eire Friends away in their 2nd outing in the DDL. Paddy and his team hoped to improve on their first outing in which they were defeated by Boyne. Unfortunatley it was not to be as they lost 3-1 in a competitive League match. Hard luck to the lads.

Ladies 3 and Mens 3 both had DDL matches at home on Tuesday the 7th of January but alas with mixed fortunes. Ladies 3 went down 4-0 to local rivals Ryston of Newbridge while the Mens 3 got a hard earned draw to An Caislain Nua of Dublin. Great perfromances from the Ladies sub Nicole Dannagher and the Mens sub, local man Ronan Murphy. Ronan proving that even though hes the big 50 (!!!) he still has the moves on court.

Mix 1 captained by Lynsey Walshe had a QF DD Cup win over Old Bawn on Thursday 9th of January. This home fixture proved to be an epic match. After losing their mens singles game (hard luck to Paddy) Captain Lynsey beat her singles opponent leveling the match 1-1. Gareth and Paddy then won the mens doubles and Lynsey and Norrie won the ladies doubles giving them the match, with a game to spare, well done to all and good luck in the Semi Finals on Baldoyle being played on Feb 24th.

Finally Mix 3 played Baldoyle Mix 1 in the return fixure in their DDL which was played away in Baldoyle on Saturday the 11th of January. Unfortunatley they could not build on their previous win and lost 5-3 in a hard fought and enteraining match. All is not lost however and Mix 3 still are in with a great chance of making it out of the group. Hard luck to Enda, John, Vincent, Fintan, Sarah, Anna Marie, Jen and super sub Nicole Dannagher.
