Kilcullen cyclist represents Ireland


Kilcullen Cycling Club rider Fionn Killeen proudly represented Ireland last weekend in the Czech Republic, delivering a strong performance on the international stage. Fionn, pictured on the right above, finished an impressive third on one stage and placed 13th on another, underlining his talent and determination against high-quality competition.
The young rider will be back in action next week as part of the Irish squad in the Rás Tailteann, Ireland's best-known cycling race. It will pass through Kilcullen on Sunday, 24 May, the final day, giving local supporters a chance to cheer him on close to home.
Adding to the family’s proud cycling connection, Tadgh Killeen, Fionn’s elder brother, will ride with the Leinster squad in the same race.

Kilcullen GAA to host 'Smallies' cycling event


Kilcullen GAA’s Healthy Cubs Committee will host a Smallies Cycling Event on Saturday, May 16, following GAA academy training. The event is also open to the wider community.
The event will take place on the community walkway at 11.15am and is being held in support of National Bike Week. Young children and their families are invited to bring their bikes along for a few safe laps after the academy.
The event will begin at the clubhouse, R56 YX81, and aims to promote fun, fitness and safe cycling for local smallies.

Kilcullen Cycling Club riders shine at Kanturk


Kilcullen Cycling Club enjoyed an excellent weekend at the Kanturk 3-Day, with strong performances from several riders, writes Liam Walker.
Tom Hughes finished 2nd overall and 7th on the final stage. Fergal Regan took 3rd overall in the C3 race, while Conor Regan was 2nd on yesterday's stage and 4th overall in the C1 race.

Good Kilcullen performances in Kanturk

Today, Tom Hughes took over as leading junior and 2nd overall after a super performance in this morning's Time Trial in Kanturk, writes Liam Walker, and he held his position as 2nd after the 90 km road race this afternoon. 
Conor Regan is 4th overall going into tomorrow's last stage. Fergal Regan is also 4th overall in the C3 race.

Kilcullen athletes helping mountain rescue team


No.1 Fitness Kilcullen is participating in the Mondello 24-hour Endurance Cycle on 20 June, a challenging event in aid of Dublin & Wicklow Mountain Rescue. The Kilcullen team can be supported at this link, and every contribution, no matter how small, plays a crucial role in helping the rescue team continue their life-saving work.
DWMRT is a 24/7 emergency rescue team serving Dublin, Wicklow and Louth, made up of highly trained volunteers who give their time, skills, and expertise purely out of commitment to helping others. They’ve been saving lives from their base in Roundwood since 1984.
The Mondello 24-hour cycle is a test of endurance and dedication, with participants cycling continuously for a full day. The event has gathered support from several sponsors, including Kilcullen Dental, Quantum, Andrews Plant Hire, Oldstone Conservation, FJS Plant, Refillz, Scott Engineering, Las Radas, Phase Electrical, and GBS Engineering.

More success from Kilcullen cyclists

riders are continuing their current run of successes, writes Brian Byrne, with further achievement at the Des Hanlon Memorial race in Carlow. 
Tom Hughes (above) emerged victorious in the 82 km C2 category, while Conor Regan secured a commendable second place. 
In the C3 race, Dathai Killeen finished as the runner-up, earning enough points to earn a promotion to the C2 category.
It was the 45th edition of the Des Hanlon Memorial, hosted by Carlow CRC.

Kilcullen cyclist wins 2026 Coombes Connor Memorial


Kilcullen CC's Gavin Stapleton claimed a standout victory in the C3 race at the prestigious Coombes Connor Memorial in Drogheda, Co Louth. Stapleton’s clubmate, Colm Bracken, also made the podium in third place. 
The Coombes Connor Memorial commemorates two key figures in the formation of one of the area's cycling clubs in the early 1970s.
Now part of the Cycling Ireland National Single Grade race series, the event is a longstanding and highly regarded fixture on the Irish racing calendar and forms a cornerstone of one of the biggest weekends in Irish cycling.

Young Kilcullen cyclists score at Rathkenny

Two young Kilcullen Cycling Club members secured victories at the Boyne GP races in Rathkenny. 
Tom Hughes (left) was the winner of the C2 race, and Conor Regan took home the Junior prize. 
Both of these riders are new to the junior ranks and are establishing a reputation by surpassing all the seasoned senior riders.

Rás Tailteann coming via Kilcullen


The final stage of Rás Tailteann 2026 will be via Kilcullen and Athgarvan on Sunday, 24 May, as part of the route from Carlow to the finish line at Dunboyne, writes Brian Byrne. The 142.4 km ride will include a climb at the Hill of Allen after passing through Newbridge and Milltown, continuing through Kilmeague and Prosperous before leaving County Kildare.
The grand finale begins in Carlow with a ceremonial roll-out before proceeding across mostly flat roads through Carlow and Kildare.
After crossing the finish line in Dunboyne for the first time, riders will tackle three laps of a challenging and technical 15 km circuit, where the final stage winner and overall champion of Rás Tailteann 2026 will be crowned.
Over the five-day race, beginning in Portlaoise and passing through counties Limerick, Kerry, Cork, Wexford, Wicklow, Carlow, Kildare, and Meath, the riders will have covered over 656 km.

Strong turnout to cycle lane meetings in Moone-Timolin

The three entities involved with the controversial pilot cycle scheme at Moone-Timolin will report back to the community next week following a workshop series that took place yesterday, writes Brian Byrne. Representatives of Kildare County Council, Transport Infrastructure Ireland, and the scheme designers, Aecon, are reviewing the meetings and have committed to reverting by Friday week.
More than 40 people turned out to the meeting held last evening, following the workshop sessions which had taken place from 3pm. The meeting heard there had been an acknowledgement of flaws with the consultation process, implementation, and design.
"It's a waiting game now," a spokesperson for the Moone and Timolin Positive Action Group said.

Kilcullen Cycling Club roundup

Thursday evening in Carlow, rising Kilcullen Cycling Club star Conor Regan secured the interclub league by finishing second on the night with Taght Roberts in third place, and Tom Hughes was sixth to secure third place in the league overall, writes Liam Walker. The club rode the league as a cohesive unit to ensure that one of our members was the winner of the Meggers Trophy. The final club placings are 1st Conor Regan, 3rd Tom Hughes, 6th Bradley Turner, 7th Emmett Tuite, 8th Fergal Regan, and 9th JB Murphy.
Last Saturday, Tom Hughes was second Junior in the Ciaran Hammond Memorial in Wicklow.
Yesterday, in Sundrive, Conor Regan was in flying form, finishing third in the 500m TT in a time of 38.21. Taght Roberts was fifth in 39,65. In the 200 m flying qualifier, Conor's time of 12.73 was the second fastest. With Taght's time of 12.91 in the semi-finals, both riders missed out and had to face each other in the bronze medal ride-off. Conor emerged victorious by attacking early and holding off Taght. The last race of the day was the 16-lap scratch race, with Conor winning the National Championship with a superb performance, attacking again and again to wear down the field. Taght was outside the medals after some splendid performances.
Clonmel was the venue for the National Enduro Championships this weekend. Young Shane Whelan took the gold medal in the under-17 category, with seconds as his winning margin, placing him 14th overall. Shane was second in the overall series, having only competed in three of the four events. 
Congratulations to everyone for such great performances.

Kilcullen Cycling Club's U16 MTB XC national champion


Kilcullen Cycling Club's Connor Regan is the new U16 MTB Cross Country National Champion, writes Brian Byrne. He took top podium place at the event held over the weekend at Tubrid in County Cork.
At the event, hosted by Mountain Bike Club of Cork (MBCC) at their usual Tracton Woods location, he beat Fionn Crinion of IMBRC in Tallaght and Darragh O'Keefe from Dublin-based Epic MTB, leading on both laps to an eventual finish time of 42.03, almost 4.5 minutes ahead of Crinion.
Cycling Ireland congratulated all who took part in a very tough event, with 11 categories  ranging from U14 Girls to Senior Open.
