Nicholastown summer gathering

There was a great summer gathering at the 'Ring' on Nicholastown on Saturday last, writes Ray Kelly. Young and old, new and established residents sat out, chatted, ate and laughed.
A pig on a spit was the main attraction, succulently cooked by long time residents Anthony and Mary Lambe
Games and some sports went down well on the main Green — well done Imelda, Amanda, Keith, Mary and Marina, it's hard work to keep a load of kids occupied and happy.
Already planning for next year's event.

Nicholastown gets grant for wildflowers area

Nicholastown Residents Association has been granted €1,350 towards development of the wildflower area on the green, writes Brian Byrne.

The money came from the Public Area Enhancement Scheme announced last March by the Minister for Environment, Community, and Local Government, Phil Hogan TD, who yesterday approved projects worth a total of €2.975m across the country.

The wildflower garden was established by the residents two years ago, and Ray Kelly says the funding will help with signage for the area, explaining what wild flowers and grasses are in the section.

The grant was welcomed by Billy Hillis, FG candidate in next week's local elections to Kildare County Council. He said it would enhance the local environment and supports the initiative of community groups like the Nicholastown Residents Association.

'Nicks' had a right good night

'Wild' initiative explainedThere was plenty of fun and chat and music at the Nicholastown Residents Association Social Night held in the Parish Centre on Friday, writes Brian Byrne. It also seemed there was a raffle prize for everyone in the audience.

Meanwhile, Ray Kelly took the opportunity to update the company on the nature initiative on the green. The new wooden structure close to the road is actually a composter, and collections of suitable material to feed it will shortly be arranged from among the residents.

The uncut grass in the centre is also part of establishing a 'wild' area to maintain wild flowers and grasses, and trails have been cut through it so children in particular might get to know their local native flora. The next stage of this one is to have signs made to give information on what's growing there.
