Summer flowers street collection continues today

Just a reminder that the street collection for the Kilcullen In Bloom summer flowers programme continues today.
A lot of work by the KCA volunteers and CE workers goes into making the town and cheerful and colourful place for the coming months. It's expensive too.
Give what you can — every euro helps.

The street collection for the Kilcullen In Bloom 2025 flowers programme is taking place tomorrow and Saturday.

High five for Kilcullen In Bloom 2022

After three weeks away, the impact of how much the Kilcullen In Bloom flowers have developed is quite stunning, writes Brian Byrne.
Well done to Kilcullen Community Action for this annual initiative, and also to the businesses' and individuals' donations which make it possible.
It helps to make summer special.

Kilcullen is blooming ...

A bit of a treat this sunny morning with a camera walk through Kilcullen to see the summer flowers in bloom, writes Brian Byrne.

Though only recently installed, many of the displays are already looking very well, and will only improve as they come to cascade out of their containers over the coming weeks.

The stunning effect all represents hard work and dedication by the volunteers and workers of Kilcullen Community Action, with over 200 window boxes planted, along with eight large planters at CPC and Bank of Ireland.

Three new tiered planters have also been put in place, and the canoe area at Hillcrest has been replanted, and the six large barrel planters on the hill area also cleaned up.

The hanging baskets on the bridge have been put in place, the Logstown road flower bed planted, and the painting of rails and bollards continues, thanks to the help from CPC TY students and others.

In addition, the Market Square flower bed has been cleaned up and planted, and the displays in the Library Garden are also looking really good.

Flowers arriving next week for Kilcullen In Bloom

Flowers for the 2021 Kilcullen In Bloom displays are scheduled to arrive on 28 May, the recent meeting of Kilcullen Community Action heard, writes Brian Byrne.

KCA Chair Ann Cashman said that KCA members and their families who want to help prepare the boxes should contact her. Participation in the preparation will be restricted in line with covid-19 regulations.

"There's a lot of work involved," she said. "It's a huge undertaking." The project involves planting in 200 window boxes, a number of planters, and 30 hanging baskets.

KCA GoFundMe for 2021 Bloom, Fairy projects

Plans for the 2021 Kilcullen in Bloom project are now in train, with flowers expected to be in the street's window-boxes by late May or early June, writes Brian Byrne.

To fund this, and further development of the Valley Fairy Trail, Kilcullen Community Action has again set up a GoFundMe page, recognising that the normal financial supports from the community and businesses will not be available.

The funding goal is €6,000. The link to the GoFundMe page is here

More synergy planned in KCA projects

A greater degree of synergy between various related projects under the direction of Kilcullen Community Action was suggested by KCA chair Ann Cashman at last week's meeting of the group, writes Brian Byrne.

The idea was raised during discussions about progress of the Community Garden, the polytunnel, and the Kilcullen In Bloom initiatives, all of which are in train under different leaderships.

Eoin Houlihan, fronting the polytunnel project which he hopes will be 'up and running' by October, agreed, saying that getting the composting element going would be a good start. "We need to embrace the whole idea of sustainability," he observed.

Derek Hoey, designer of the Community Garden in the grounds of the Library said increasing synergy is 'a no-brainer'. He said that once the heavy work in the project is done, and some raised planters installed, 'things will start to speed up a bit' there.

The prospect of KCA growing its own flowers for Kilcullen In Bloom will be piloted once the polytunnel is installed.

"I really like the idea of them all blending," Ann Cashman said.

The good of a blooming morning

A walk around town this morning shows just how lively the Kilcullen In Bloom project is becoming, the flowers of the initiative responding very well to recent sunshine and showers, writes Brian Byrne.

Our photos tell the story on their own. Congratulations to all involved — Kilcullen Community Action and its volunteers and community workers, and the businesses and residents who have donated towards the costs.
