St Bridget’s Pitch and Putt player Ian Dillon from Brannockstown is the lead player in a four-person team representing Ireland in the Pitch and Putt World Cup in El Vendrell, Catalonia, writes Paul Aspell.
The World Cup is the sport's premier event, originally played once every two years and now every four years. The World Cup resumed in 2024 after a Covid-19 forced hiatus. Fourteen countries are participating in the competition, which began with the Opening Ceremony this Thursday evening the 10th of October with the Final on Sunday 13th of October.
It is a great honour for St Bridget’s, Kilcullen and Brannockstown as not many people get to reach the pinnacle of their sport by playing in either a World Cup or the Olympics. With the growth in the sport over the past few years perhaps someday Pitch and Putt will be an Olympic sport.
ED NOTE: It's appropriate to remember at this time that club member Chrissie Byrne has been World Ladies Strokeplay Champion twice, and Marian Courtney has been European Ladies Strokeplay Champion.
