A project to provide a set of story panels about the pugilist Dan Donnelly in Kilcullen's Heritage Centre has expanded into a possible graphic book about the bare-knuckle fighter, writes Brian Byrne.
The recent meeting of Kilcullen Community Action was told that an agreement in principle between Donnelly's biographer Patrick Myler and artist David Butler had been brokered by Des Travers to consider publication of the book.
The artist has previously illustrated and co-authored similar publications, about Michael Collins and the Voyage of the James Caird with Antarctic explorer Ernest Shackleton.
"This is a type of work that has generated a whole new readership," Des Travers told the meeting. "Patrick Myler's original biography is now out of print, and he is going to approach his publisher to see if they would take this project."
He suggested that if this didn't work out, KCA might consider the possibility of setting aside a contingency sum for self-publication.
It is planned that the Dan Donnelly storyboard project will be progressed. A €1,300 grant towards its cost was provided by Kildare County Council.
