Military memories at Culture Night
Memories of various local lives in the military service were shared last evening at the 'Thank you for your service' Culture Night event in Kilcullen Library, writes Brian Byrne.
Organised by Librarian Julie O'Donoghue as an appreciation for the contribution to community life in Kilcullen by former and currently serving members of the Defence Forces, it provided a fascinating insight into military life at all levels, as told by people who have been an integral part of the fabric of the town for most of their lives.
The speakers were John Martin, Joe Mallon, Francie O'Brien, Suzanne Dempsey, Howard Berney, Billy Redmond, and Noel Bergin. The experiences and memories they provided had both differences and commonalities, but among the latter what was clearly evident was the importance of comradeship and their commitment to service in the name of Ireland and its people.
Introducing them, Julie O'Donoghue spoke of their service not only for our country, but also their involvement in community life here in Kilcullen. "They have shared their hard won skills and their training with us in the community, which has added greatly to the quality of life in the town," she said. "Tonight is about showing our appreciation for this contribution to the cultural and social life of Kilcullen ... in our sporting clubs, the arts, drama and literature, involvement in the church and schools, our very successful scouting troop, charitable organisations, voluntary and community groups, and education."
The subsequent two hours were fascinating, informative and entertaining, and we'll report on it in more detail at a later date. A selection of the Diary's pictures from the evening are posted here, and all can be viewed at this link.
