Looking Back: Carnalway protest 2005

Back in August 2005, there was a big local protest over the closing of a right of way at Carnalway bridge, writes Brian Byrne.
We were reminded of it with this clipping from the Leinster Leader of the time, where the story got top billing. Reporter Niamh O'Donoghue was previewing an upcoming public meeting about the closure of what was described as 'an ancient right of way' to Kilcullen.
Residents of Brannockstown were particularly incensed about the move, with Steve Schwer telling the reporter that people from that area had been swimming at Carnalway 'for generations'.
The Diary covered the subsequent meeting, and you can link through to our stories from below. There is also a link to the Diary's photos from the event, which will raise the nostalgia level somewhat (apologies that they are all low-resolution version, but the originals are long gone).
Our thanks to PJ Lydon for bringing in the clipping.
