Permission refused for Dunnstown synchronous condenser grid plan

Kildare County Council has refused planning permission for a synchronous condenser grid support facility at Dunnstown, outside Kilcullen, writes Brian Byrne
The permission for the flywheel-technology system was refused because, according to the Council, the applicant hadn't adequately assessed the potential impacts of the development on the nearby Harristown Common, a wetland of National Importance.
The system would have been built adjoining the existing ESB electricity substation at Dunnstown.
The application had been made by Island Stability Services, with an address in Dunboyne, Co Meath.
The local community is also awaiting the result of an appeal to An Bord Pleanala against refusal of permission for a battery energy storage system at Dunnstown, by Strategic Power.
