Application for synchronous condenser facility at Dunnstown

A planning application for a synchronous condenser grid support facility at Dunnstown, near the existing substation, has been lodged with Kildare County Council, writes Brian Byrne.

Such systems are used to adjust conditions on an electricity power transmissions grid.

The application by Island Stability Services Limited is for a 10-year planning permission to develop the facility, which will connect to the adjoining ESB Dunnstown Electricity Substation.

The proposed development will have a projected life span of 50 years, at the end of which it can either be decommissioned or refurbished to extend its life.

The development within a site compound of circa 1ha will include a 10-metre high building to house equipment including a synchronous condenser with flywheel and associated equipment. In the compound outside there will be cooling equipment, six modular containers to house electrical and control equipment, a step-up transformer, an auxiliary transformer, an external circuit breaker, electrical balance of plant, a firefighting water tank, above ground oil separator and connection pit.

A 100-metre length of underground cabling ducts and cable will connect to the adjoining ESB substation. There will also be boundary fencing, security entrance gate and CCTV

The planning reference is 211282 and submissions can be made up to 12 October 2021.

The registered address of Island Stability Services Limited is in Caulstown, Dunboyne, Co Meath. Other companies registered at the address include Dunmore Power Supply Limited and Killybegs Wind Power Limited.
