Call for accommodation for Dún Áilinne students

The organisers of the summer excavations at Dún Áilinne are looking for homestay accommodation for student archaeologists on the project, writes Brian Byrne.

Dr Susan Johnston from the Department of Anthropology at George Washington University, who has been conducting investigations at the site since 2006, has been leading teams at Dún Áilinne over the last seven years. She has a number of students already lined up who want to work there this summer.

The students come to Ireland under the auspices of the Blackfriary Archaeological Field School, based in Co Meath. "We’re looking for families with a spare bedroom who could take one or two students, or more if they’ve more room," says Finola O’Carroll of Blackfriary, noting that they will be here from June 20th to July 15th.

They would need all meals (breakfast, packed lunch, and dinner) and to be able to do their washing. "Usually, they take the opportunity to travel at the weekends, but payment is on a seven-day week basis, regardless of whether they are away or not. They may also need a lift to and from the site every day, but, depending on numbers, alternative transport might be arranged. If the homestay families have to transport them there is an extra allowance for this."

Anyone interested in providing the accommodation should contact Finola at 087 6849964 or finola.ocarroll@bafs.ie, or Nessa Dunlea at 087 2339610.
