Brannoxtown CNS raises first Green Flag

There was great excitement this morning when the first Green Flag earned by Brannoxstown Community National School was raised by Cllr Tracey O'Dwyer and Muinteoir Dawn, writes Brian Byrne.

The flag was earned for the pupils' hard work on keeping litter out of the school its grounds and cutting back on waste, and the event included both a rendition and a reprise of the very appropriate song, What A Wonderful World, to a keyboard accompaniment by Muinteoir Deirdre.

Muinteoir Dawn recalled the campaign for the flag undertaken by the pupils, which was interrupted by the school closure during last year's lockdowns, but later continued with an effort that attracted great praise from the Green Flag organisers. Cllr O'Dwyer congratulated the school for achieving the flag, and said she was there to celebrate the hard work they had done. "Our future is certainly in safe hands with you." The pupils were also congratulated by the Principal, Muinteoir Sarah, who said they could be proud that the flag would be there every day when they came to school.

Afterwards, the senior pupils interviewed Tracey O'Dwyer about her work as a councillor. The questions included what was a typical day ("long and very busy") and what is the most important part of her work ("helping people where I can")?

Tracey is the first of four local councillors who are speaking to the pupils about Local Government, as part of learning about Citizenship, Democracy, the Irish Government and houses of the Oireachtas.

A day like any other at Brannoxtown CNS. Special, as always.
