KCA ‘will work with’ others on next Ballyshannon quarry action

Kilcullen Community Action is reviewing the An Bord Pleanala documents on the approval given to Kilsaran for their quarry at Racefield, and plans to work with other interested parties on what to do next, writes Brian Byrne.
“We are very shocked and disappointed with the decision,” says KCA spokesperson Eoin Hoilihan, “especially after ABP's own inspector recommended not to give permission.”
Noting that Kilsaran are also seeking an extension to the company’s quarry at Ballysax, he said if that is granted it will mean ‘a ring of three quarries’ around Kilcullen.
“There is a notable increase in the number of lorries going through the town, many of which are Kilsaran vehicles, and this is not good for the development of Kilcullen and the surrounding areas.”
He added that this makes the local roads less safe and is overall detrimental to the environment.
The decision last week came as a shock to the Ballyshannon Action Group and local people, who are reviewing what options there are now. There has been cross-party political support for their position.
