A petition to pause the decision to close bank branches in Kilcullen and Monasterevin has been delivered to the CEO of Bank of Ireland, Francesca McDonagh, by the Labour Party's spokesperson on finance, Ged Nash TD, writes Brian Byrne.
Senator Mark Wall, who organised the petition on behalf of the Kildare South branch of the party, had previously delivered the petition to Deputy Nash at Leinster House. The petition was a follow-up an online public meeting on the issue.
Thanking the hundreds of people who responded to the petition, Senator Wall said there is a lot of worry in both towns about the proposed closures. "Time and time again in responses to the survey, among the most common replies were 'this will affect my business and my ability to carry out cash transactions', 'this will affect my elderly mother, father', 'it is not right', 'not everybody is in a position to travel to another town'.”
Senator Wall says the closures will be a blow to both towns, and his party is asking that, as a minimum, the closures be paused. "This will cause problems for business and for the most vulnerable in both communities. We in the Labour Party believe this is a regressive step ... we must fight these closures and we will continue to highlight the very valid issues in our petition.”
