On this day in 1520, explorer Ferdinand Magellan found a way to circumnavigate the globe when his ships entered the stormy strait later named for him, between the tip of South America and the island of Tierra del Fuego. The perilous trip brought him to a relatively quiet unfamiliar ocean which he named the Pacific.
