Hazel’s latest book shortlisted for Irish Book Awards
Local author Hazel Gaynor’s latest book, The Bird in the Bamboo Cage, has been shortlisted for the 2020 An Post Irish Book Awards Popular Fiction Book of the Year, writes Brian Byrne. Among other authors in the shortlist this year are Marian Keyes and Graham Norton.
The Bird in the Bamboo Cage has spent several weeks on the Irish Times Bestseller List, and the North American edition was launched recently, under the different title When we were Young and Brave.
“When I was editing this book in April during lockdown, I honestly wondered if it would ever be published, or find its way to bookshops and readers,” Hazel wrote this morning on her Facebook page. “By some miracle it did, and now as we head into second lockdown, I can celebrate this fabulous news.”
There is a public vote and details of this will be published later. Though the Awards event this year will be online, it will be screened as a special RTE One TV programme on 10 December.
