Evelyn asks for government support for arts during pandemic

The Irish Government has yet again ignored the arts in dealing with the effects of this pandemic, writes Evelyn O'Sullivan of Drama Dynamics.

I know that there are people who are suffering badly at the moment, and my heart goes out to the children and the parents of children with additional needs. The blight of recognition we share in the arts shades into insignificance to their abandoned needs.

However, the partaking in and enjoyment of the arts is our heritage which we have kept alive by traditional storytelling, dancing, singing, music and art to our wonderful dramatists, poets, performers and artists today.

How wonderful to hear Leo Varadkar quote Seamus Heaney at the beginning of the lockdown. How many were enthralled by the wonderful performances of Paul Mescall and Daisy Edgar Jones in Normal People? A Kildare man who has been nominated for an Emmy.

I have always seen my classes and other classes such as art, dance and singing and music as giving people of all ages a break from the often harsh realities of life where they can immerse themselves in their imagination and creativity. I am not looking for any special treatment, nor do I believe that one sector of our society is more important than another. I am looking for an appreciation of the importance of art and how much it is and will be missed by our children and adults alike.

ED Note: Just a reminder too that the Drama Dynamics classes are restarting on 14 September, as noted on the graphic at the top of this piece.
