300 saplings available for Kilcullen

Tree saplings are available in Kilcullen for immediate planting, courtesy of the Irish Beekeepers Association, writes Brian Byrne.

The trees were donated by the IBKA via local beekeeper Paul Leighton, following the cancellation of the IBKA's Annual Conference due to the coronavirus situation.

"Every year at the conference, they give each beekeeper a supply of native Irish tree saplings, usually each delegate would receive 50 trees," Paul says "As the current situation has hindered the distribution of the trees, I have had 300 very nice, bare root Native Irish Tree Saplings from Coillte delivered to me directly."

The trees are available to individuals and residents groups, and there's a window of about two weeks within which they must be planted or be trenched until next year. The saplings include Silver Birch, Alder, Oak, Rowan, and Birch.

All trees are pollinator and biodiverse friendly and are a great addition to the Kilcullen 2020 Pollinator Plan, but due to Covid-19 restrictions, a mass planting of this donation of trees will not be possible.

Anyone taking trees will be asked to provide a photograph of the planting to furnish to the IBKA and Coillte for their generous support. All plantiung should be done in line with the Covid-19 physical distancing protocols.

Paul can be contacted on 087 2941206, after 6pm.
