Another view of Kilcullen's downtown
This latest picture of Kilcullen is courtesy of Pat Kelly, sent to Martin Murphy in correspondence about Pat's memories of Barber's shop, writes Brian Byrne. Pat notes that the picture is a commercial postcard of the time, with advertising on the back for J Quinn, Newsagent.
I've tentatively dated it through the registration number on the car outside McTernan's, which suggests it was possibly the late 1940s or early 1950s. Noteworthy is the name TJ Dillon over the pub that later became Berneys and is now Fallons. Also the original archway beside Barber's which would have once linked to a building no longer there.
The Brennans window where what is now Woodbine Books shows the drapery part of that family's business.
And the easy way that two people are walking on the road starting up the hill is an indication that motor traffic wasn't the issue it is today.
Many thanks to Pat Kelly for delving again into his memories box. Which also brought this memory from Maureen Hamilton.
