Calverstown author and wildlife expert Juanita Browne’s latest book has won the Literacy Association of Ireland Children's Book Award, writes Brian Byrne.

The Great Big Book of Irish Wildlife is illustrated by Barry Reynolds, and is published by O’Brien Press.

A total of 76 children’s books published in the last two years were considered by the Book Award Jury for the competition. The Award is presented every two years.

LAI says the aim of the Award is to encourage the writing, publication and appreciation of children’s literature in Ireland, both works of fiction and non-fiction.

Juanita Browne is a zoologist and media graduate who has worked for almost two decades on wildlife productions in print, documentary radio, and on television. Her books include Ireland's Mammals (2005); Kildare's Natural Heritage (2008), Put the Kettle On — the Irish love affair with tea (2013); and My First Book of Irish Animals (2014). She also edits Biodiversity Ireland, the magazine of the National Biodiversity Data Centre and is currently working on the All-Ireland Pollinator Plan.

Dubliner Barry Reynolds has worked on the Oscar-nominated, animated movie The Secret of Kells, on Aardman and Sony Pictures Animation's Arthur Christmas, and on Irish language graphic novels An Táin and Deirdre agus Mic Uisnigh.
