Great Tennis Club BBQ and open day

Presentation of Kilcullen 700 mixed doubles prizes — Greg Norris, Chairperson, Eoin Smith, Helen Dolan, Derek Phelan, Kilcullen 700 treasurer.
Kilcullen Tennis Club have had a busy June ending with a sunny summer's day for the open day and BBQ on June 22nd, writes Niamh Crosbie. The children were entertained by games and face painting while the finals of the Ladies and Mens summer singles took place on court.

Once again, there was a trophy competition and a plate competition for each event, with everyone participating in the trophy competitions and the defeated players being entered into the plate. The day of finals was another great success with plenty of excellent tennis being played and plenty of spectators on hand to support the players. A special guest at the BBQ was the legendary Pat Lynch, one of the founding members of Kilcullen Tennis Club.

This was followed up by the presentation of prizes, which included the prizes for the Kilcullen 700 Mixed Doubles played earlier in the year. Joining us this year to present the prizes was Derek Phelan from the Kilcullen 700 committee who presented the club with a Kilcullen 700 trophy to mark the occasion. The Kilcullen 700 Mixed Doubles tournament winners were the dream team of Helen Dolan and Eoin Smith, with Eamonn O' Toole and Lucia Brennan as runners up.

A huge well done to everyone who took part in this year’s championships and to all of our finalists for, once again, making this event the highlight of our year.

Kildare Steiner School: Something different in Secondary Education

On June 20th we hosted our first 'Experience Day', led by Nikki Ellis, the class Guardian for September’s new first year class in the Secondary School, writes Angie Ruane. The theme of the day was 'exploration', an element of the Steiner Class Seven curriculum (equivalent to first year of mainstream secondary).

The children taking part were from our existing school as well as from other mainstream schools, and a great experience was had by all, including creative writing, experiments with magnets and woodwork.

We plan to hold more such days in the future to enable students not familiar with our ethos to see how subjects can come to life!

Philanthropic Support — we were delighted to hear at the end of May that we had been granted support of £2,500 from the UK based Hermes Trust, to begin equipping the Secondary School. This will be a great help in preparing the classroom and establishing tools for woodwork and other crafts. We have applications pending with other potential sponsors and had a visit from a German philanthropist this week, so it’s full steam ahead!

We are continuing to actively enrol for September. So please spread the word and contact us on kildaresteinersecondaryschool@gmail.com.

Tracey to seek playground surface improvement

Kilcullen's newly-elected councillor Tracey O'Dwyer is to look into having better surfaces installed in the town's community playground, writes Brian Byrne.

This follows the story posted on the Diary yesterday, which generated a substantial response from parents in the town about the unsuitability of the sand currently being used.

Cllr O'Dwyer says it would be an appropriate project to bring to the Local Community Development Committee in Kildare County Council and will discuss with fellow councillors how an improvement might be progressed.

The playground was opened in 2011 following a strong campaign since 2005 by a Playground Committee. This included a robust meeting between the community and councillors over the proposed location for the facility.

The total cost of the playground was €263,800.
