Bees, Moths, Bats and Wildflowers, in Biodiversity Week

Over the nine days of National Biodiversity Week 2019, which begins on Saturday next, there are a range of family-friendly events happening in the mid-county area, including Kilcullen, writes Brian Byrne.

The Kilcullen Pollinator and Beehive Project is our town keynote event, and will be on Sunday next at 12 noon in the Town Hall. This is a Kilcullen Tidy Towns/KCA initiative being progressed by beekeeper Paul Leighton. A visit to the two new community beehives will follow the presentation, weather permitting.

Other events, under the aegis of the County Kildare Heritage Office, include a Moth Morning at Burtown House and Gardens, near Athy, on Saturday 18 May starting at 8am. Also on Saturday, at 2pm, there will be an exposition on the Wildflowers of a Disused Sandpit, at the Arthurstown Landfill in Kill. At 3pm on the same day, there's a talk on The Liffey: a source of biodiversity, in Newbridge Library.

Information on making your garden a haven for bees, Bee-tastic Gardens, will be given at an event on Sunday 19 May in the County Kildare Heritage Office in Naas, at 2pm.

There's a Wildlife Walk in Kildoon Wood near Nurney, on Monday 20 May at 4pm, while the Birds of the Grand Canal can be experienced at 9.30pm on the same day, at the canal in Sallins. Also that evening, at 9.30pm, you can Learn about Bats in Naas at the Naas Community Library.
