Badminton update
And another season starts after our Summer break, writes Kilcullen Badminton Club Match Secretary Enda O'Neill.
In September KBC hosted the Southwest League Shuttlefest which was a joint collaboration between KBC and the Southwest League. A huge thanks has to go to Lesley Cobb SWLBL President, Sinead Kelly Hon Secretary/Treasurer, Chelsey Cox Shuttlefest Committee and Martin Dunne PRO KBC who stayed until the wee hours laying the match mats, John Mullen and Sarah Walshe for organising raffle prizes, Jennifer Monaghan KBC Secretary, Vincent Coller Chairperson KBC, for looking after the tuck shop and doing other major jobs that get forgotten in the organising of such events. Also to the ever dependable members of Kilcullen Badminton Club who baked, supplied and helped out during the busy weekend.
As usual KBC had some great results with Jennifer Monaghan and Oisin Egan winning the Grade 5 Mix, sister and brother act Tara and Keith O’Neill making it to the Grade 3 Mix final and narrowly losing out to ex Kilcullen husband and wife partnership Aine and Alastor Moody. Our Ladies had some success with Sinead Kelly and Tara also making it to the Grade 2 Ladies Final again to narrowly lose out to Siobhan Willis and Sharon Daynes of Baltinglass. It was a big day also for Kendra P Valroy who won the Grade 6 Ladies Final with Celine Soh in her first ever competition.
The South west Ladies and Men's doubles leagues have also commenced and KBC had four teams playing this week. First off were the Grade 6 Ladies who had two matches both against Portlaoise BC. The first match away didn’t go the Ladies way and they were defeated 3-1, in the return leg on Thursday 4th of November the Ladies got a well earned draw. Well done to captain Teresa McGlynn, Maeve Valroy, Orla Brophy and Linda Murtagh on a solid start to the season.
Our Grade 2 Ladies hosted Johnswell of Kilkenny on Thursday 4th November and laid down a marker for the Grade 2 Ladies league beating their counterparts 4-0 in a fine display of badminton, well done to captain Lynsey Walsh, Sinead Kelly, Siobhan Willis and Tara on a great performance.
Our Grade 3A Men hosted Portlaoise on Tuesday 9th of November and also gave a impressive display of badminton leaving nothing on the court. The KBC lads dominated this fixture. Our Grade 3 A men impressively beat Portlaoise 4-0. Well done to captain Oisin Egan, John Mullen, Keith O’Neill and Vincent Coller on a great start to their campaign.
Overall a good start to the South West League for KBC, next week we have the following fixtures to look forward to in the SWL. At home Grade 2 Men host local rivals Kildare CWMS and Grade 6 Ladies host St. Laurence's. Travelling are the Grade 3 B Men who visit Ballinabranna of Carlow and the Grade 4 Men visit Carlow YM. The Dublin District League also gets underway with our Div 7 Men travel to PSLC. Good luck to all.
