Water leak is 'nobody's business'

It's three weeks since we posted this piece about the long-term and extensive water leak at the entrance to the Back Lane, writes Brian Byrne.

And now three weeks into the heat-wave, it is still bubbling merrily away, with apparently no one in authority caring very much.

I know that a number of people have chased up the local authority and Irish Water about it, though as yet maybe not the ESB?

Anyhow, the latest representations were made by Sheila Peacocke, somebody who should be taken seriously as she and her family are very solid Kilcullen stock.

But no. Her communication with Kildare County Council resulted in an 'it's not our business' reply. And when she called Irish Water, after initially having some difficulty making herself understood to the non-national at the end of the line, subsequently did get a phone call back.

Which didn't help. "It was that 'it isn't our business'," she told the Diary. "The leak has been there for months now. Talk about wasting water … gallons every hour!"

So, whose business is it? Is there anyone's water meter (remember them?) which is churning at turbo speed? If there's even a councillor in the MD who could help get the answer, we'd love to hear from them.

Oh, sorry … sure Kilcullen itself won't be their business at all next time around.
