Early morning for Pieta House

Well, the weather held, the organisation worked flawlessly, and at just a minute after four this morning and around 350 people set out for a walk from the square in aid of Pieta House, writes Brian Byrne.

Organisers Lorna Brophy and Richie Kelly, and their band of volunteer helpers, accepted donations and gave out certificates, and an hour or so later the first group were due back for rashers and buns.

"We are thrilled with the turnout and support from everyone," Lorna said afterwards on behalf of herself and Richie.

For those who didn't make it out of bed early for the walk around New Abbey Stud, there's a chance to contribute tonight at the barbecue in O'Connells. Music and Pig on a Spit from 8pm. Raffle prizes include a pair of Ed Sheeran tickets; a mid-week break for two at Renvyle House, including two nights B&B and and evening meal; golf and lunch for two in Mount Juliet estate, hair and beauty vouchers and lots more.

Doubtless there will be those who burn the candle at both ends today.
