Clear rules for bottle recycling manners

A new year resolution reminder for some people, perhaps? writes Brian Byrne.
Kildare County Council has put up a nice new sign reminding people about the etiquette of recycling at the glass and cans facility in the Leinster Marts car park. It really does make the rules very clear, especially about not leaving boxes and bags on the site.
Bet those few who do the fairly regular littering at the facility still won't see it, though.

Christmas Tree Recycling - Tree Shredding

Kildare County Council are again providing a Christmas Tree Shredding service this January.

Christmas trees can be left for recycling at the Council Nursery, Naas Road, Newbridge until 23rd January – the recycling area is clearly signposted and lies just beyond the new roundabout on the left-hand side of the Naas bound dual-carriageway.

Please note this service is for Natural (real) Christmas trees – please do not leave artificial trees at this location. Please remove tree stands, wires, lights, decorations, tinsel, packaging, wreaths etc. prior to leaving the tree for recycling.
Shredding has already commenced, and the wonderful landscaping material will — in time — be used for local landscaping projects.

This community recycling service is provided free of charge by Kildare County Council. PLEASE do NOT leave any waste or litter at the Nursery!

The Nursery will suit people from Newbridge, Kildare and surrounding areas – the Council have Christmas Tree Recycling facilities at other sites also: Clane - Clane GAA, Prosperous Road; Naas – Fairgreen; and  Leinster Street, Athy - Meeting House Square.

Don't use bottle banks this weekend — Council

Kildare County Council is asking the public to 𝗡𝗢𝗧 use the recycling banks for glass and cans this weekend, but instead to hold onto the glass until next week.

If you visit and the bring bank is full, please bring your items home and try another time while visiting other essential services.

Eleven out of 40 sites are unavailable due to the virus, and with a 40pc increase in glass being left at sites it is impossible to maintain the sites satisfactorily,

Social distancing at banks is also difficult if they are busy, and please - no disposable gloves, boxes, bags or other waste to be left whenever you use the sites.

Beat the Virus: Stay At Home.

Agri plastic waste collected today ... but where will it go?

The collection of farm plastic waste which has been going on in Kilcullen Mart all day today will take around 100 tonnes of the stuff off the hands of farmers in the area, writes Brian Byrne.

But it doesn't deal with the problem the country has, along with others, of where to send the plastic for recycling. China, which took 95pc of our plastic waste, has closed its doors to waste from Europe since 1 January.

The waste has been arriving in trailers and small trucks all day, being weighed and charged for at a minimum of €15 per half-tonne by Walker Recycling Services based in Portlaoise.

Walker Recycling specialises in dealing with agricultural and horticultural waste, sorting, shredding, cleaning, baling and shipping it to countries which have traditionally recycled it into materials to be used in the manufacture of new products.

Their 'bring centre' collection at Kilcullen today is one of 60 such locations which have been taking the waste from farms throughout the midlands.

Ireland is the worst producer of plastic waste in the EU, according to Eurostat figures, at 61kg per capita a year, compared to Germany in fourth place which produces37kg per person a year.

Minister for Communications, Climate Action and Environment Denis Naughten says a Europe-wide solution would be to develop a market for plastic recyclate at a competitive cost.

He also says that improving the quality of collected materials is 'critical' to increased recycling.

Nobody was available at Walker Recycling to comment on how the China 'crisis' is impacting on agricultural plastic waste disposal.
