Kilcullen fishing closed due to heat

The committee of Kilcullen Trout and Salmon Anglers wishes to advise members and the wider community that, due to the prolonged period of extreme heat and the resulting increase in water temperatures, all angling on club waters has been temporarily suspended with immediate effect and until further notice.

Current river conditions are placing significant stress on trout and salmon. When water temperatures rise above approximately 18°C–19°C, dissolved oxygen levels fall and fish can struggle to recover after being caught. Even when careful catch-and-release practices are followed, the physical strain of being played in these conditions can be fatal.

As custodians of our local waters, the committee believes that the welfare and long-term survival of our fish stocks must take priority. This temporary suspension is therefore considered necessary to protect the river and its fish population during the current warm spell.

Members are asked to refrain from all angling on club waters until an official notice confirming that fishing may resume is issued.

The committee will continue to monitor water temperatures and river conditions closely and will provide a further update when conditions improve.

Anyone who observes distressed fish, fish mortalities or other environmental concerns is encouraged to report them promptly to Inland Fisheries Ireland.

We appreciate the cooperation and understanding of our members and the local community. By acting responsibly now, we can help protect our river and ensure that it remains healthy for future seasons.

The Kilcullen Trout and Salmon Anglers AGM will take place on Sunday, 15 February, upstairs at O’Connell’s Pub, Kilcullen, at 6:30pm.

Angling season closes

The 2025 fishing season on the Liffey has ended, and the Kilcullen Trout & Salmon Angler Club's waters are now closed for all fishing.

The club asks members and non-members alike to respect the closed waters and not fish.

With heavy floods and poor hatchs of fly, the fish need some peace as they prepare to spawn and recover. 

The club thanks all members and landowners for their continued support in allowing the club access to their land.

The river will reopen for fishing on March 1st 2026.

Griese anglers' meet-and-greet

The River Griese Trout and Salmon Anglers Association will host a meet-and-greet event at The Old Hardware in Narraghmore on Sunday, August 17. It is open to all ages and non-members.

The event will offer an opportunity to share stories about the River Griese and hear about the association's work on its conservation.

Fishing equipment donated by members who have passed on will be sold, with the proceeds going to charity. New members are always welcome.

Trout fishing season opens

Membership subscriptions for the Kilcullen Trout and Salmon Anglers are now available in Daybreak Kilcullen for the 2025 trout season. 

All members are asked to please remember to respect all land owners and their properties, without their support there would be no club.

The season starts today, Saturday 1 March.

Meanwhile, water levels are high at the moment on the River Liffey. The ESB are releasing water from Poulaphouca after recent heavy rainfall and this will continue for some time. 

If you do plan to fish the waters, please exercise caution. Don’t take chances while wading.

The meeting will be at 6pm in O'Connell's Bar.

Reminder on Fishing Licences

Fishing Licences for the waters under the control of Kilcullen Trout and Salmon Anglers are available in the Daybreak convenience store.

The club reminds all members that Licences must be carried at all times while fishing. The season opened on 1 March.

Members are also reminded to take care and watch for rising water and check the Liffey Release website for scheduled floods.

River closed to fishing from today

Kilcullen Trout and Salmon Anglers Association point out that as of today, the 1st of October, the river is closed to all fishing until next March.

The club would like to thank all who supported them, from the members to the local lands owners.

Sun comes out ... and then there's mess

These pictures were sent in by the Kilcullen Trout & Salmon Anglers. They represent broken and discarded bottles and rubbish left on riverside areas recently.

The boxed stuff represents what Brian Boyle took on himself and tidied up. He also notes that when he was doing something similar recently, young people watching him sniggered.

If same young people have little else to do and are bored, there's plenty of Tidy Towns volunteering that would help.

Kilcullen angler's pike catch

Kilcullen man and keen angler Eoghain Kirby recently caught this Pike weighing 29lbs 05ozs in the River Barrow, and he's in for a Fish of the Month Award from Southside Angling.

You can help him get the award by 'liking' the Facebook post at Southside Angling here.

Eoghain says the fish is his new Personal Best catch, taken 'after many a blank session'. "I couldn't believe my luck."

Somebody removing fishing club signs

Kilcullen Trout and Salmon Anglers have asked that nobody interferes with any club signs or signs erected by landowners, writes Brian Byrne.

This follows the removal of a number of club signs by members of the public, according to a post by the club.

The signs had been placed on a number of fences along the club's fishing waters on the Liffey.

The club says the signs had been placed with the permission of, or by request of the landowners.

Access restrictions for anglers

Kilcullen Trout and Salmon Anglers Association has informed members that the waters on Harristown Estate will not be open for fishing until 8 June.

The club has also reminded that here is no access to the inch area from the fence line beside Riverside Manor, and has asked members not to park in Riverside Manor and climb over the fence.

In addition, the area of the river that runs beside An Tearmann is part of North Kildare Trout and Salmon waters and this area will remain closed for all fishing out of respect for the Camphill community.

The usual rules continue to apply — all members must carry their licence on their person at all times; do not cause any damage to land or fencesfences, do not litter, light fires.

All government guidelines must be respected in regards to social distancing and travel restrictions.

Anglers hoping for early reopening of waters

Kilcullen Trout & Salmon Anglers Association are trying to finalise the reopening of waters to fishing.

A provisional date for 18 May is being worked to, though the club says there's a hope that it may happen before that.

This follows a statement from Inland Fisheries Ireland that as and from May 6th, 'anglers may fish in a location less than or equal to 5km from home'.

Respect fishing closure — Kilcullen anglers

Kilcullen Trout & Salmon Anglers have asked all members to respect their decision to close their water to fishing until 12 April, writes Brian Byrne.

In a statement, the club's Committee said it was a 'difficult decision' that was not taken lightly, but as everyone has been asked to stay at home and not make non-essential movements it can not, and should not, promote such movements.

They also say the decision was made out of respect for the landowners who grant permission to be on their land.

"If we all work together, hopefully we will back to normal soon," the statement concludes.
