A day trip for Kilcullen Seniors

A day trip for Kilcullen seniors is being organised by Kilcullen Lions Club to Kilmacurragh House and Botanic Gardens in Co Wicklow. The date is Wednesday 4 September and the day out will finish with dinner and music in Fallons of Kilcullen.
A hidden gem of 18th century garden and arboretum developed by the Acton family, the Queen Anne style house is now roofless and derelict, but there is a commitment from Government to rehabilitate it under the direction of the OPW, which has managed Kilmacurragh for many years. The gardens have been restored by the National Botanic Gardens
Places are limited for what promises to be a most enjoyable day out. If interested, contact Annette on 087 6320040, Teri on 097 2815083, Siobhan on 087 6166324 or Frances on 087 9746000 before Monday 26 August.

Strong turnout to Safety and Services evening

Photos: Tracey O'Dwyer.

There was a very good turnout last evening for the Safety and Local Services information evening for senior citizens held in Kilcullen Parish Centre. Kilcullen based Community Garda Jon Brien and Annette Head and Tara Phibbs of the ALONE organisation gave very comprehensive presentations on security and the range of support services available to seniors.
Gda Jon covered everything from security in the home, vehicle security, and internet security, to fraud and scams, bank jugging and money mules. Tara and Annette gave an overview of the many support services that ALONE Ireland assist with to support people age at home safely and securely.
Thanking the presenters for their information and their time, organiser of the event Cllr Tracey O'Dwyer also expressed her appreciation to all who had attended on a bitter, cold night. "One where it would have been much easier to stay home by the fire," she said, adding that anyone with follow up questions from the evening are welcome to contact her, Gda Jon, or Tara at ALONE.

Seniors had great day out to Avondale with Lions

More than 40 Kilcullen Senior Citizens had a most enjoyable day out on Wednesday last, writes Frances Clare of Kilcullen Lions Club. The outing was organised by Kilcullen Lions and started with a trip by bus across the Wicklow Gap to Avondale House — the home of Charles Stewart Parnell.
Avondale is now also home to Ireland’s first Treetop Walk and many of the group were delighted to be able to try out this exciting new attraction. Rumour has it that one or two even managed the slide from the top of the tower!
There was also plenty of time for a coffee and a stroll around the grounds. Everyone also took part in a guided tour of Avondale House where they heard the fascinating story of the various owners of the house, including its most famous resident, Parnell. The sun shone on the day and all came back to Fallon’s in Kilcullen where the group was treated to a lovely meal.
To finish off the day, entertainment was provided by John Kelly and Terry McNally. Songs were sung, jokes were told, good laughs were had by all and great memories were certainly made.
