Brigid 'symbol of hope in dark times'

The relevance of St Brigid today and how she is a symbol of hope in dark times was emphasised by Cllr Tracey O'Dwyer on Wednesday last when she opened the Kilcullen Bridge Cinema season of films themed on Brigid, writes Teresa Nurse. The opening film, Mrs Robinson, attracted great interest and proved to be an engaging and entertaining watch, looking back over the life of Mary Robinson and the Ireland she grew up in.
The next film in the season is this Tuesday 4 February. Based on Amy Liptrot’s 2016 memoir The Outrun, it is an extraordinary film set in the Orkney Islands where nature and weather provide the backdrop to the story of Rona. After 10 years of spiralling into addiction in London, Rona returns home to the Orkney Islands, hoping to maintain her recovery. Attempting to reconcile her complex family history as well as her destructive past behaviours, she takes a job with a wildlife conservation charity. Saoirse Ronan’s performance in this film has been described as "mesmerising, forceful, stunning and career best."
Screening at 8pm, tickets are on sale in Woodbine Books and on Eventbrite.
