'No capacity' for Kilcullen traffic audit
A request for a comprehensive traffic audit of Kilcullen has been kicked to touch by Kildare County Council, writes Brian Byrne. Officials told Cllr Tracey O'Dwyer at yesterday's meeting of the Kildare-Newbridge MD that they 'do not have the capacity' to do it.
The councillor had sought the audit to inform current and future planning. Information on traffic volume, vehicle movement, peak times, pinch points, speed, and type of vehicles were among the topics Cllr O'Dwyer highlighted as necessary. In their response, officials said the request can be considered in future studies as part of the development of an updated Settlement Plan for the town, 'subject to resources'.
"We have a number of new planning applications coming on stream for Kilcullen and there is only one junction on the main street through which all traffic is going to have to pass," Cllr O'Dwyer said in presenting her motion. "I would have concerns about the impact of additional traffic at this already busy junction." She pointed out the current limitations of the junction which are already restricting the provision of a much-needed filter light.
The councillor said that by identifying the potential issues through an audit, solutions could be incorporated in future planning applications, "so that the Council does not have to pick up the tab to address the problem at a later time."
She accepted the report that her request can be considered in the context of the next Kilcullen settlement plan.
