Looking Back: Cool on the Kilcullen stage

Back in 1997, these cool dudes and cool gal were ready to perform in 'Guys and Dolls' in Kilcullen Town Hall, writes Brian Byrne.
The show, which ran for eight nights, was produced under a youth drama scheme sponsored by Kildare County Council, and was directed by the late Paddy Melia. Typically, the director even brought key members of the cast to London to see a professional production of the show and learn from the best.
A cast of 40 included, pictured above from one of PJ Lydon's collection of local newspaper clippings, Bernard Hillis, Declan Brennan, Joe Brien, Shane McGrath and Pat Cullen, and Laura Burke.
According to the clipping of the story written by the Nationalist's Barbara Sheridan, others stepping out on the Kilcullen boards included Ann Fitzpatrick, Louise O'Reilly, Padraic Munnelly, Charles Poufong, Ruth Talbot and Dick Dunphy. Dick was even then described as a 'veteran Kilcullen actor'.
