Looking Back: The Bachelors in Kilcullen
In the current issue of The Bridge, contributor John Duffey reminisces about the old heydays of Kilcullen Town Hall Cinema, writes Brian Byrne. One of the live acts he recalls are The Harmonichords, who later became international singing stars as The Bachelors.
Your editor also remembers the group appearing there, under both names. The Bridge piece prompted PJ Lydon to once again dig through his vast throve of Kilcullen memorabilia, and he came up with this postcard of the trio, acquired at one of their early gigs here as The Bachelors. The postcard is signed with the first names of Con Cluskey, John Stokes and Dec Cluskey.
As The Bachelors, the Dublin-born lads were primarily based in the UK. They had several international hits during the 1960s, including eight top-ten singles in the UK between 1963 and 1966. Charmaine, Diane, and Ramona were amongst their biggest successes.
And we heard them first ... in Kilcullen Town Hall.
