Kilcullen woman to run for Aontú in local elections

A Kilcullen woman has been selected to stand for the Aontú party in the Newbridge LEA in the local elections in June, writes Brian Byrne.
She is Melissa Byrne, an English and Anthropology graduate from Maynooth University and an outreach officer with the nonprofit 'Students for Life' which focuses on engaging students in campus advocacy work and volunteer initiatives.
Melissa is 24 and Kilcullen has been her home for the last 20 years, and she says she has a deep love and affinity for the area. As a teenager she studied with Drama Dynamics and was a member of Kilcullen Canoe Club. She says these helped give her an understanding of the importance of local amenities and services.
Melissa lists among her passions the promotion of eco-friendly practices and the enhancement of arts and cultural initiatives. Other interests include the challenges faced by people who struggle with mental health, as well as exploring opportunities to create recreational spaces for teenagers.
“I’m really excited about this, my first foray into running for election," she says. "I am delighted to be able to give people a choice as to who they vote for."
