Trees arrive for Saturday's planting day
All is ready for Saturday's Community Tree Planting day at the Kilcullen GAA Field of Dreams site, writes Brian Byrne. Some 2,000 native tree saplings arrived yesterday morning to the GAA clubhouse.
The event will operate from the clubhouse, so individuals and families taking part should assemble there with their shovels, spades or trowels from 10am. It is anticipated that the job will be completed by 2pm ... but it could be sooner.
The areas where the trees are being planted are all clear of vegetation so it will be an easy dig for all. But by the same token, the softness of the topsoil suggests wellies for all.
The day is a joint initiative by Kilcullen GAA and Kilcullen Community Action, with the support of the 100 Million Trees Project, which aims to plant that number of native Irish trees across Ireland over the next ten years.
The trees will be planted around the boundaries of the 8-acre site, on which the club is building new pitches, a Skills Arena, a 1.2km cycle-walkway, and extra car parking.
