Spades to the fore at the Field of Dreams
With upwards of 150 people signing in at the Kilcullen GAA for the tree-planting this morning, fairly short work was made of getting 2,024 native tree saplings into the muddy ground of the Field of Dreams, writes Brian Byrne.
The weather was kind for the event, a joint project of Kilcullen Community Action and the GAA Club, and the planting by young and older had an almost festive feel.
The technical oversight was courtesy of Catriona Taylor of Blessington Lakes Garden Centre, who advises on the 100 Million Trees Project, which aims to plant that number of native Irish trees across Ireland over the next ten years. The Kilcullen trees were sourced through that project.
Those who came along definitely heeded Christy Moore's 'Don't Forget Your Shovel' advice, and from the number of shiny new spades brought along, Brennan's Hardware must have had a busy Friday.
