First 'Wall of Fame' exhibits in Community Centre
Frames waiting to be hung. |
The first three frames of what will likely become quite a large honouring of Kilcullen people who have represented Ireland will shortly be mounted in the Community Centre, writes Brian Byrne.
It’s a ‘Wall of Fame’ initiative by the Centre, with each frame holding a ‘green jersey’ provided by the person or their family, along with a citation and a photograph of them in action in their endeavour.
Each display is being prepared by Niamh O’Connor for the Centre, and the first three are about transplant athlete James Nolan, World Ladies Strokeplay Champion Chrissie Byrne and European Ladies Strokeplay Champion Marian Courtney.
A number of further frames are in the process of preparation, and Centre manager Enda O’Neill is anxious to hear of other such Kilcullenites who have worn the national jersey who may not be on his list.
The idea parallels a similar initiative of recent years where local club jerseys were donated and framed on another wall in the Centre. “That idea was very well supported,” says Enda O’Neill, who hopes that this new Wall of Fame will be a source of inspiration for young people who use the Centre’s sporting facilities, encouraging them to aspire to similar achievements.
