Lack of yellow box leads to 'mayhem'

For the want of of a yellow box there is often traffic 'mayhem' in Kilcullen, writes Brian Byrne. That was the nub of an argument made yesterday by Cllr Tracey O'Dwyer when she asked Kildare County Council to provide one at the entrance to the Church Car Park.
The official response to her motion at the monthly meeting of the Kildare-Newbridge MD was that 'there are no plans' to provide such a box, as guidelines outline that yellow boxes are installed 'where two public roads meet'.
Saying that she understood that, 'otherwise we would have them popping up everywhere', the councillor nevertheless plead a special case for the Kilcullen location. "The entrance into the car park at the Church now also happens to be the entrance into a housing estate," she explained. "What happens is cars coming from the Town side to turn into the car park find the entrance is blocked until the traffic lights turn green, and by this time traffic has backed up, blocking the traffic lights and it causes mayhem in the centre of the town."
Cllr O'Dwyer concluded that hopefully, given the location of the car park so close to the traffic lights, it can be considered for a yellow box to facilitate the continuous movement of traffic flow through the traffic lights and main junction in the town of Kilcullen.
