Remembering the Kilcullen women

A project in Kilcullen Community Library has just been set up with a view to remembering the women who have contributed to life in Kilcullen down the decades, writes Brian Byrne.
It's very simple, people are invited to drop by the Library and add the name of a woman they feel should be remembered for 'embracing the spirit of Brigid' in their work here. Photographs will also be welcomed.
"During our Memory Monday events we get a lot of photographs shown, and it struck us that they mostly were of men," says Librarian Julie O'Donoghue, who runs the Memory Mondays with Mary Orford. "So we thought it would be nice to rebalance things a little and remember the women, who were mostly back in the home or working in shops in the village."
She emphasises that it's not just about women in the past, but also those of today who are all contributing to the social fabric of the community in so many different ways. (With that in mind, it seems to the Diary that the single sheet of paper in the Library foyer won't be at all adequate ... but there's plenty more where that one came from.)
This afternoon's Finding Brigid walk from the Library will be a good opportunity to start with the expansion of that list. Happening from 2pm.
