New artwork unveiled in the Valley
A new interactive artwork unveiled in the Valley will delight visitors of all ages, Antoinette Buckley of Kilcullen Community Action said today, writes Brian Byrne. The piece was unveiled by Nuala Collins, whose late husband Jim was the prime mover in the development of the riverside park in the 1970s and '80s.
"Jim's passion for opening up the valley and making it accessible to our community will always be remembered," Antoinette said. "His legacy lives on through the tireless efforts of our community members."
The work by Cian Meketarian is a representation of fairy wings, reflecting the Fairy Trail installed as a feature of the park in 2019 and refurbished in 2024. The piece is the latest commissioned by KCA from the artist, who has brought vibrant colours and creativity to the town during the last year.
Antoinette Buckley expressed the community's thanks to the sponsors, local businessman Jonathan Keogh, and the Kilcullen Fishing Club. Neither the artist nor Jonathan could make it to today's event due to holiday commitments.
Antoinette took the opportunity to thank the KCA volunteer group and its community workers for their maintenance of the Valley as part of their Tidy Towns commitment. She noted that the effort has been recognised by the awards of bronze and silver medals in the last two years of the Supervalu Tidy Towns competition. "The team has worked tirelessly to enhance the town, and these are amazing achievements. We're aiming for gold, so we have to keep the work up, but I do not doubt that we will get there."
Two seats will be installed near the new artwork, and the area will also be specially landscaped to provide a tranquil sensory space.
