Heritage Week events today
Kildare's involvement in the fight for independence is the subject of a talk in the Parish Meeting Room in Kill this evening, as part of National Heritage Week, writes Brian Byrne.
The event runs from 8pm-9.30pm and features historian and author James Durney, hosted by the Kill Local History Group. His talk will cover the men, women and children who took part in the struggle during the revolutionary period. Attendance is free.
For those interested in the history of unusual buildings, a talk on The Wonderful Barn at Barnhall in Leixlip will be given there this evening by local historian John Colgan, starting at 7.30pm.
Eleven registered events which are running each day through the week include talks, walking tours, cruises and exhibitions.
In Kilcullen Town Hall last evening we had a fascinating talk about how UCC archaeologists are using bones found during road works excavations in this area to learn more about lifestyles in the Iron Age. A full report from that will be published here later.
And from tomorrow through Friday, two heritage videos telling the story of the Gordon Bennett Race will be available to view in Kilcullen Heritage Centre, from 2.30pm-5pm.
The Diary's linked spreadsheet of events through County Kildare can be accessed here. They are tabulated both by town and by date.
